TENTEREIKLD ANNUAL BACKS. January, 1857. Tho second anniversary of this favourite meet came oil' as advertised, on the 1/ith, lGth, and 17th instant. The whether was all that the mont indent lover of sport could desire. Tho heavy clouds, winch had been dropping ram lor some weeks previous, cleared off, leaving bright Sol in undisputed possession of as brilliant a blue sky as was ever traversed bjr an Italian sun. The course — a most severe one — was in beautiful order; tho entries for the different prizes were good ; the racing was first rate. Some of eur ' bits o' blood' would prove themselves dangerous competitors at Iiomcbugh, and if the present intention of the owner of our Town Plate winner 'Newbold' is carried out, 'towuius' can be accommodated to any amount. The booths looked gny, were well supplied, and the greatest order prevailed ; no ' row' of any kind disgraced tho course, and much credit is due to our Chief Constable, Mr. Gordon, and those acting under him, for the forb...

MISCELLANEA. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 10 February 1857

MISCELLANEA. Ewtoesuip. — Wo have known a very learned gentleman to obligingly bring us a contribution, with the remark that 'as wo wero of course con tinually occupied, it must doubtless. bo quite an accommodation to receive a good article once in a while — and on examining thu 'good' article in question, we have found throe gross grammatical errors, divers sins of awkwardness, and two words mis-spelled, in the first and second sentence. A lecture which will bear printing as it is delivered, is an exception : and, in a word, there are very few men, who have not served a regular apprenticeship to the types, who can sit down and, without ' halt or let,' express their thoughts readily and fluently in writing.
