ROUGH ON ACTORS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bowral Free Press — 27 September 1884

jtouoii On actors, Tiiu MnnaroMcrcury thus i'efors to llio perfor mances of actors of tho present clay :—"Tlio absence, in amateurs anil professionals, of tlio essential and main requisite to perform thcatricully or musically, ought rightfully ami consistently to appear anomalous and monstrous, and to be quickly discerned and discountenanced by tlio .critical public. But, strangely and unhappily, it is commonly tlio reverse. Tlio falsost and most bung ling acLiug is vociferously applauded; tho most luolish and witless sayings are highly savoury, and create burst!! of laughter; fan tastic costume is -largely used, and is ap parently taking witli tho spectators; dis cordant music and vapid singing aro oftou not only not grating but relished. This, wo are aware, ia a trenchant and grava criticism. But the fault is previous, and groviounly must they answer it. And lost any may be hurt by our animadversions— which wo do not wish or anlioipato—we can didly avow that this judgment, sluirod...

Harold Netherly; OR, T II E . G A M E OF LIFE. CHAPTER XIII. " To-morrow will be my Waterloo 1" Yes, j and as the train swept on towards London, Netherly was studying the- situation, tho • opposing forces; and adverse possibilities, as eagerly as did the renowned chieftains that for the first time on that memorable day confronted each other." . The doings and discoveries at Vere Priory ■would, ho knew, occupy a prominent posi tion in the columns of the morrow, Satur day's, . Cornwall jmpers, possibly in rlioso of; Devonshire; but there boing no post delivery' in London on Sunday, it would not be'till Monday morning, in all probability, that any one connected with the Assurance 'Oliice would obtain au inkling of what had occurred, unless, of course, by some un looked-for accident, which, must be risked. He, Netherly, should then lmv'o all day Saturday to labour in, undisturbed,—seven precious business-hours, which for once must be made to do the work of sevonty. Sunday also would be ...

WIT AND HUMOUR. [Newspaper Article] — The Bowral Free Press — 27 September 1884

SVIT AiSTJ> 1H1M0UR. Garlylo, in.his'a*l vice to young men, says, " If you doubt whether to kiss a [jrotty girl, givo her tho benoJ.it of tho doubt." A crusty old bachelor Bays that Adam's wife was called Evo because when she ap peared mail's day of happiness was drawing to a close. "Papa, have dogs got wings?"—"No my child? what makes you ask that ques tion ?"—"Because, hero the papor says a dog flew at a man, and bit him." Brown says ho hates inquisitive people, and the worst kind of inquisitiveucss, he thinks, is that exhibited by tho man who stops him in the street, and wants to "know when he is going to pay.that little bill. A smart man explained to liis : little daughter that tho days in summer were longer than in winter, becauso lieatmade everything expand.
