BERWICK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. To th Editor of the S. B. and Jforningtoan JoTaral. Sia,-On the undoubtedly reliable authority of Mr. John W. Burns, the public have the intense satisfaction of knowing that within the last four months the Rev. W. L. Morton has become rich in the 'computative degree, and the horrors of a threatened famine mercifully averted fromu the Ministerial door until that suillenium of plenty; £200 per annum, had evidently become rganlrded as omethinlg princely by his very frugal minded congregntions. Dedueting £70 per annum for houos euht and £10 for nmintaining a horse and buggy, it must be, as Mr. Burns sagaciously observes, obvi ously untrue, that with the handsome balance of £80 at his disposal anything lille four and ixpence in the pound could even be hinted at. The South Bourke AND Mornington Journal. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30th, 1878. Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 30 January 1878

SID WVEDNESD.AY, JXNUiLTRY Bth, 1878.: eotaI ntdIigenic. -C The selectors in the Parish of Jeetho, which borders on the Shire or District of Phillip Ishlmd and Woolamai, seem to be placed in a somewhat similar position to that occupsed by the sole tors in the Brandy Creek district. They have complied with the counditions as far as possible, but they have no roadstogetto orfrom ther holdings. Several of the selectors, accompanied by members of .the Shire Council of Phillip Island and Woolamui, waited on the Commissioner of Public Works on Wednecsay last, and endeavoured to induce him to make a road for them, but they could only sneceed in getting a promise of .half the cost of two bridges overthe liass river. If it had been some mining bubble they had gone to ask assistance to promote, they would have been successful. However, we suppolse they must be satisfied with "small mercies,' but it seems ridiculous that the Crown should dispose of land, and not provide roads for the. occupant...

CORRESPONDENCE.   From the Shire Council of Dandenong suggesting     action to obtain payment from the Government for the compilation of the local returns that were [so?] frequently asked for, and which often were of very voluminous character; that the best way to attain the object would be for all the bodies co- operating to write a letter addressed the Chief Secretary, and forward it to the Dandenong Shire and all the communications thus received would be transmitted to the Government. KOO WEE RUP SWAMP. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke and Mornington Journal — 30 January 1878

KOO WEE RUP SWAMP. It is generally known that a considerable portion of Koo Wee Rup or Great Swamp in the county of Mlornington, was some   time ago submitted for sale by public auction,' and about 12,000 acres were disposed of in half section blocks, the purchasers being Melbourne capitalists. One of the con- 'ditions of sale was that a drainnge fee of five shillings per 'acre should' be paid by each' purchaser for the purpose of carrying out a united effort to free 'the swamp from flood waters. The purchasers formed a drainage - committee, and proceeded to carry out' a system of drains right across thei swamp to concentrate the waters of the several creeks, and convey them within channels and em bankments down to the inlets on Western Port Bay. The works were commenced two years ago, but it is only during a few months of the summer they can be proceeded with owing to the flooded state of the swamp, the undertaking had to be suspended.. A fresh start has again been mad...
