"Good Morning." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 23 June 1896

'Good Morning.' Dear ' Gossip,' — Although I am not a subscriber to your paper, still I see it regularly and enjoy it from end to end. In reading a letter, signed ' Rouseabout,' in one of last week's issues, I was reminded of a case that happened in Goulburn some time ago : — ' A man was summoned and charged with assaulting a Chinaman with a shovel. When asked why he had banged the Chinaman over the head, he replied, 'This man was tho third Chinaman that had said ' Good morning ; welly cold ; ' and he could not stand it any more ; so the Bench sent him up for six months.' ' I am afraid ' Rouse about ' must, be of a very morbid disposition if he can't appreciate a cheery ' Good morning ' from friend, relative or stranger, which, no doubt, helps the world to look brighter in many ways. Yours, etc., ' Good Morning.' Dear ' Gossip,' — I see by the last issue that you have been badly used by a person styling himself ' Rouse about.' Well, old fellow, I am not going to flatter you, but, re...

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 23 June 1896

Hordern Brothers. CHEAP CLOTHES. There's a big shop in Pitt-street, Sydney, where they are booming Freetrade. They build Buits of clothes for 45s that they used to charge 55s for when the duties were paid. They make 'em of serge, sergerette, tweeds, and suitings. Quality undoubted. Fancy getting a suit made to measure from a large selection for 45s. They make a dress-suit for four guineas and upwards. It looks as if we were going to get our clothes cheap on account of the tariff, so if we can cover our anger with decent clothes we won't be so badly off. If we have 45s left after paying our taxes we can look re spectable ; if not, we can look the other thing. Country residents wishing to share in the reduced prices can obtain full par ticulars, patterns, self-measure forms, and tape, by sending a postcard, addressed Hordern Brothers, Pitt-street (only), Sydney. To promote a feeling of interest in colonial industry a business suit is made to order, of N.S.W. tweeds, for the modest sum...

Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 23 June 1896

Gossip. There's a new step on the floor, my friends, there's a new face at the door, my friends, and some men about Sydney have gone wrong, my friends. Here's the Vicar of St. Paul's Church of England, at Bur wood, and the Vicar of St. James', in Sydney, inviting their parishioners to smokes and smoke concerts. The Burwood man is the worst of the two in some re spects, because he says in his paper, addressing his congregation, ' We see each other in church Sunday by Sunday, we pass each other in the street as strangers for the next six days ; the rich man does not know his less fortunate brother, the hard working woman is a stranger to her more favoured sister, aud yet they sing and pray under one roof on the first day of the week, and kneel side by side before the altar. Breth ren, these things ought not so to be.' It's bad enough to have a parson balking that way, but when he actually invites the people who hear him preach to come and have a smoke at the vicarage in the evening, i...

Sheep Directors. DELEGATES' MEETING. IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 23 June 1896

Sheep Directors. DELEGATES' MEETING. IMPORTANT CONFERENCE. The idea of amalgamation is in the air, The Stock Board delegates meet on Monday night, July 6 th, at eight o'clock, to discuss the possibility of a legal amalgamation of all the 64 boards in the country. Nobody can say a word against such an action, be cause the boards ought to have been amalgamated years ago. The sheep directors of the country are going to move in the same direc tion and it is a very open question as to whether the stock boards and the sheep directors could not form one body. The need is for a union of all the men who raise the staple products of the couutry. The question of how far this is possible will be discussed during the ram sale?, and the good, hard sense of the delegates will be manifested in the results. The Tenterfleid Stock Board took the initiative in the conference of stock board delegates. The Corowa Board of Sheep Directors has called the meeting of their delegates. The sheep directors dele...

Our Book Review. " A FIRST FLEET FAMILY." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 23 June 1896

Our Book Review. ' A FIRST FLEET FAMILY.' A First Fleet Family. A hitherto un published narrative of certain re markable adventures, compiled from the papers of Sergeant William Drew of the Marines. By Louis Becke and Walter Jefferey. Colonial edition. London : T. Fisher Unwin, Paternoster Square, loyb. ±*rice, post free, from this office, cloth 4s 2d, paper 3s. An Australian book by Australian men appeals to me always and I want to be kind to it and to them, but the first consideration is that of my readers. If any man ever buys a book on my recommendation and then feels that I've defrauded him, I hope he'll let me know it. This book has been kindly reviewed by a large number of critics and I'd like to agree with them, but I can't. There was somebody once trying to persuade an old Scotch woman that there was no harm in taking a walk on the Sabbath day. She objected. Said the per suader, ' Woman, dont you know that Jesus Himself walked through the fields on the Sabbath day ? ' ' Aye...
