Shortening Days. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Shortening Days. Let's lake the instant by the forward top For we are old, and upon our quickest decrees The inaudible an?i noiseless foot of time Steals, ere we can effect them. These lines of Shakespeare's embody a lesson at once so profound and truthful that;, from whichever side we examine them, or however we interpret them, they will be found to fit an interminable number of conditions of daily life. Like most of the Doet'a utterances, thev are far reaching and entirely correct at all points ; but perhaps in a subjective way there is no more .pertinent illustration of their philoso phical force and veracity than when we apply them to the decline of the season. It is when shortening days are rapidly overtaking us that we indeed begin to see how little time is -eft for us to accomplish many of those objects which we determidly set ourselves to compass. That ?'inaudible and noiseless foot' has stolen along through summer despite its apparently linger ing gait, we find that it has ...

The Dreyfus Case. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

The Dreyfus Case. The fining and imprisonment of M. Zola seems to be the work of terrorism. One year's imprisonmen and a fine of j£I20 for the championing of a friend seems a severe thrust. We are anxiously awaiting cables of the denoument, for if Dreyfus is innocent, a vigorous and wealthy party such a M. Zola is con nected with will be sure to cause trouble. Then again, justice will surely triumph in the end. At present the Jewish residents of Paris are in great excitement for their personal welfare. '2 _±ZZ^ ^' Jl

Count Esterhazv. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Count Esterhazv. The ' Daily News' intimates that Esterhazy connected with the Dreyfus affair in France is of Jewish extraction. The official acbonnt of the family origin is that they are descendants of Attila. Undoubtedly, since the 18th centiirv when the estate of Solomon Esteros was divided between his two sons, they have been known as Christians, and, though one of them at least was an active Lutheran, -'they are now Catholic dignitaries of Hungary and Bohemia. But there is an obscure story of a Jew from a village in South Germany who became an Esterhazy, a story the origin of which we have lost snd greatly desire to regain.. Whether try ! far-off inheritance or modern conviction, Major Esterhazy, of the Frencn army, was sbffieiently dissociated from the anti-Simetic clamour to be one of the seconds to M. Cremieu Foa in his dual in 1892 with M. Drumont, which was followed by the encounter between the Marquis of Mores and M. Mayer, in which the latter perished. The ancestors of M...

Believing in Fate. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Believing in Fate- * ' Every spirit makes its house, but afterwards the house confines the spirit,' writes Emerson. The same idea jwas promulJated a few years prior to Emerson's time, by Plato, who says that every spirit prepares a like body for it to dwell in. As the brain by itcs increase forms the skull, as the kernel determines the shape of the shell, and as the embryo shapes its outer case, so does the spirit of man alter and affect its dwelling place. How a man looks is deter mined by what he is ; and what he is deponds upon his childhood. His health, his activity, his capacity, result from already excited will, and hang upon its power, its determination to be contented and work, or its resolution to mope, sulk, and be idle. Even ill-health can be combatted ; a healthy spirit will throw off the ailment that will subdue add kill one who is languid and lazy. So for it is true that every spirit makes its own house; and, when that house is swept and garnished the spirit will delig...

SPECIAL NOTICE. Mr. Finally McLean respectfully intimates to the Jewish community that he has just opened spacious and commodious premises situated at 49 Elizabeth-st., for the purpose of carrying out on the most economical terms, the business of ladies and gentleman's tailoring, guaranteeing perfect fit and up-to-date fashions. Mr. Rogalsky's box for the Chevra Kedisha has been on view at this office for a few days and the contribution dropped into it if small has, we anticipate amounted to a satisfactory sum. We have often advocated that boxes should be dis tributed to collect the small donations for the Montefiore Home, and the object being of more general interest would receive larger support. In fact many who can only afford to contribute small coin to this deserving charity would appreciate the opportunity.

Premature Burial. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Premature Burial. The rapidity of decomposition in Eastern countries led to a custom among the Jews of burying very soon after apparent death. Hygienic as this institution is from the point of view of survivors, ib involves some danger of premature burial. Even among our Christian neighbours, who do not so early put away their dead, the necessity has been recognised of greater precaution than is usually taken. The pious Jewish office of watching the dead is eminently to be encouraged, but it is not carried on for a sufficient length of time to prevent those terrible accidents, the evidence of which has too often been given when coffins have been opened. Count Michael de Karnice Ear nicki, Chamberlain to the Emperor of Russia, has now invented a safety apparatus destined to prevent premature burial, of which a full description has been forwarded to us {Jewish Chronicle). In the coffin, over the chest, there is . an opening of several inches. To that opening a little apparatus is adap...

ALD. COHEN ELECTED. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

ALD. COHEN ELECTED. A special meeting of the Moree Council was held on the night of Friday, 11th inst., for the purpose of electing a Mayor for the ensuing year, to succed Aid. A. B. F. No title [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

To measure life, learn then betimes, and know Toward solid good what leads the nearest way — Milton. Everyone seeks to get through life in the smoothest way possible, and when once com fortably on the chosen road finds some means ? if at all inclined to be thoughtful — to assist the others less fortunate in the struggle. Ways of accomplishing this end differ, as may be naturally expected, and in our community it geems that a general awakening has taken place. There is a danger in having many leaders and too much material to do the work with, as it will allow a return to the humdrum ways that have existed in the past. Still, good must result. The meeting of ladies called for Sunday next is a step in the direction of ac complishing an orthodox and humane object, young and old can take a pleasure and pride in knowing they are working for a good cause, the younger members to visit their sick friends and the others to do those duties which attend the last period of our transitory life. I...
