STATE EDUCATlION. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Sin-The ,h as ing of the "drum ,colesS sati" is once aga:n sounding an alarm in many of the churches, and the leaders of denominationalism are oalling upon their rank and file to take up arms, fall in to do battle against our ' irreligious system of State education," whilch as rhey aver, is sowing the seeds of ie.% fidelity, socialism, treason, and every crime of the deepest die, sending the. rising generation straight to ruin, misery, degradation, and eveslastint perdition. 'Ihe generals in this war against onur State education are Bishops Moor-· house, Gould, and Vaughan, supported by a large staff of clergymen of various denominations, of whom Dr Cairns may be takern as a sample. SHIRE VALUATION. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 October 1878

SllHiRE VALUATION. (7o the Editor of the Standard.) Szn,-Will you allow me to call attention to the valuation of the rateable propertyain this shire; which has lately been furnished to the Shire Counedl It appears from it that the annual value of the rateable property in the Shire of Alexandra has fallen no less than £3,064 luring the last twelve months. The valuation has been st.adily rising from £20,096 in 1874 to £23,275 in 1877, but during 1878 the enormous decline above mentioned is stated to have occurred, while the number of persons actually valued Ihas risen during the last twelve month from 595 In 1877 to 811 in 1878. Considering the rapid progress of se?ectiou during tile last few year?, tile number of licenes and leases whichll hav3 matured into freeholds, the effect of tile large bridges at bfolosworth, l'hornton, andi Riveradale, and tile prices obtained at recent sales of property in this shire it is at once apparent that the recent valuation Is an ignorant and mis Ihi...

MINING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 October 1878

MIINING NOTES. The O.K. had a trial crushing of one and a half tons of quartz from their claim on Tuesedy, the yield from which was 3 oz. This is considered very satlsfactory,j hut not nsuilelent to pay for carting and crushing expnsrs, and it is contemplhted by the share. holders shortly to erect machinery upon the ground, the distance from the mill being some nine miles. Mir Fi.rgueson also had a crushing of 7 tons which gave the yi Id of 7oz. This is not sn good as it has been, but still pays well, the whole claim being his own property.

CONCERT AT GOBUR. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 19 October 1878

CONCERT AT GOBUR. -4-----. The concert on Tuesday evening last, in aid of the Alexandra hospital, was a great success, surpassieng by far anything of the kind that ever tok place in Gobur. The hell was crowded in every part, about £1 10s having been realiseI. The eunmitee deserve credit for the spirited manner in which the affair was carried out. The Gobur Asacmbly Hall was tastefully decorated with festoons of flowers, ferns, and evergreenr, which gave an airiness and cheerfulness to the room. Mesars Hamilton, Montgomery, and Mrs Hamilton deserve special mention for their services in tile decorative art. An artistic and appropriate design by them in fern leaves, "Help a worn and weary brother," conspicuously graced the rear of the stage, and lent an additional attractiven' as to th, other ecnlic tthets. More would have been realised had it not been ftr a general brelier whether true or not, that as at present man aged, the hospital is in a most unsatisfactory condition. It is to be...
