It is unpleasant to note how devoid of taste, find how wasteful of the advantages nature bestows residents in the up-country districts of this colony generally are. Whether they aspire to found d township, or merely aim at building a house or two, their primary ondea .vour seems to be to destroy, as far as possible, atl natura\_. graces the locality selected may irossess.. If, for instance, the discovery of an adjacent gold-field, or of some other local advantage causes a fertile, well-wooded spot to be chosen as a site for habitation the timber around is wantonly felled or burnt down, ' until the locality, denuded of picturesquohess and variety, of verdant foliage and cool shade) lies bare and blank, dotted with blackened stumps and strewed with the fallen trunks of the ' green robed senators ' of. tho wood, or disfigured with a dismal array of leafless trees, whose life sap has been cut off by ringing the bark , standing gaunt and ghastly, like unbuvied skeletons in a huge grave y...

THE HON. S. SAMUEL AT WELLINGTON. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 November 1868

THE HON. 8. SAMUEL AT WELLINGTON. In his addreis to his constituents at Wellington, on the 11th instant, the Hob. S. Samuel referring to the late Administration said:— The last ministry failed to retain the conBdence of the Asiembly ; and they were very properly defeated. Our opposition to them was perfectly justifiable. They bungled the finances of the oountry— they failed to carry their policy— and last, though not least, they outraged pnblio opinion by unfairly treating old and zealous Government officers. They dismissed an old ofloer —the Collcotor of Customs, Mr. Duncan— who had been 22 years in the servioe of the State | and he had always proved himself to be a most jealous and honest offioer, whose 'faults e'en leaned to virtue's side,' because he had been so indiscrete as to use harsh language. (What about the Bridge.) I will explain all about the bridge, telegraph office, and roads presently. I have done everything in my power for your advancement i and I will ahow you befo...

KIANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 November 1868

KIANSSA. (feomour correspondent.) November 17th. — Nothing of importance has transpired since my last communication. The 'washing ups'that have taken place are generally very poor, owing to the short ness of the season. The Three-mile tunnel is progressing, and is now about 400 feet in length. The shareholders on tho Charcoal reef have accepted an offer made by a gentleman in this locality to place a powerful pump on the ground on condition of being admitted as a sleeping shareholder in the reef. I was present the other day when our P.M. asked one of the prospectors at the Three mile reef what stone hod been lately gotten, and the reply was, ' Not a pound this six months.' The crushing machine is at present engaged upon some 80 tons of poor -stone from the Three-mile, the prospectors and the proprietors of the machine agreeing to divide the proceeds between them. This stone, which was raised last May, is expected to go J an oz. to the ton. Our new schoolmaster, Mr. Creagh, has comme...

COMMERCIAL. Times Office, Friday. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 November 1868

COMMERCIAL. Times Office, Friday. SmOB the breaking up of the dry sultry weather last week we have had cool breezy days, and some sharp frosts at night, which, in the Tumut district, have in some instances done partial injury to the growing orops. Several refreshing showers of rain have fallen, bnt they have been utterly inadequate 10 supply the moistnro needful to our high-lying localities. Feed is getting source and burnt up, and although the wheat crops still look well a oontinn once of the present dry weather will affect them in juriously. Numbers of sheep are now travelling for their summer quarters, and one Book of Mr Fennell't has, together with the Shaking-bog run in the Tumut district, changed hands, Mr John Jenkins, of Nan gut, being the purohasor. During the week Mr G. B. M. Collins of Kimo, despatched a mob of fat oattle to the Yiotorian mar kets, whioh will be followed by another draft in a few Business in Guudagai is, as usual, very dull at this time of year, but the o...

TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 November 1868

TUMUT. (FROM OCR CORRESPONDENT.') November 19th. — On Thursday the 12th inst., it snowed within a few miles of Turaut and on tho following morning we were visited with a sharp frost, tho effects of which were that on farms in exposed situations the potato top3 turned black, and young melon and pumpkin vinc3 were more or less frost bitten ; but I believe the general damage is very insignificant. Local news of a public character is particu larly scarce this week. Many of our towns men have gone to Wagga Wagga to attend the cattle show and the races held there, which subjects form the principal topics of conversa tion among thoso who have stayed at home, and some little betting is even going on as to the result of the Ten-mile Race. Our business folks almost envy our Wagga Wagga friends the benefits they will reap from this invasion of Tumutites, for our townsmen, when out for a holiday, are apt to dispense their substance with no niggard hand. : From the Riverine journals I learn that...

ADELONG. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 November 1868

ADELONO. (FBOM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) November 19th. — The weather has been less sultry than it was it the time I last wrote, and we have had a few pleasant showers of rain, but nothing l\ke enough to meet the re quirements of the highlying land. On Saturday night last Professor and Mrs. Parker gave an entertainment at Mr. C. Shaw'a Adelong Hotel, but owing to their arrival not having been publicly announced they had but a poor house. They gave a second entertainment on Monday night when they had an attendance that made up for the thin house on the previous evening. Professor Parker performed tho feat of cutting a bar of lead in two with ono stroke of his sword admirably, and afterwards had a sot to with Mr. Moore, who used his weapon well for an amateur, but was disarmed twice by the champion swordsman. Our mining news is of an ordinary descrip tion this week. I have' nothing special to inention, but all the old claims are doing well. All hands are apparently busily engaged in raising...
