Orientation Week Was a Long Time in the Planning by Chris Dyne Collegian Staff Writer August 19 marked the the official start of Orientation Week 1989. The events that took place that week were devised to familiarize new students with the college envirment, to introduce them to the academic side and cocurricular activities at Behrend. The planning and preparation of Orientation Week ran from the beginning of Spring semester through the end of summer, and proved to be worthwhile. The Coordinator of Student Organizations and Program Development, Kevin Downey, was Chairperson of the Orientation Program. Beth Buck and Ray Van Dusen were the intern co-chairpersons. This was Kevin's first year working with "Because of the time and effort put in by Beth and Ray, this year's orientation week was the best ever." There were also 56 student orientation leaders who "did and excellent job of, welcoming the students, and making their transition to PSU smooth.," added Downey. Highlights of...

Behrend's Policy on Sexual Assault Expanded by John Sweet Collegian Staff Writer Patty McMahon, Behrend's Nurse-Practitioner, has been a key figure in expanding the school's policy on sexual assault. Numerous services have been implimented including: emergency _transportation by taxi or ambulance io a hospital for treatment if someone has been assaulted, costs of exams, routine testing, and rape care. McMahon states that it is best to have someone other than a friend or relative to provide emotional support. She is willing to accompany any victim to deal with the details and procedures involved after a rape has been committed. She reports rape is best averted through insight. Some suggestions for prevention include double dating, avoiding drugs and alcohol, slaying away from any activities that make you feel uncomfortable at a party or on a date, and if all else fails, screaming or running away. "Education is our biggest ally," said Randy Hoffman, manager of the Police and S...

Over 2,500 Tickets Issued Last Year There is no question that there is a parking problem on campus. Lasi academic year, Police and Safety _issued almost 2500 tickets bringing in over ten thousand dollars in fines. One of the major reasons for the parking problem on campus is that there are more cars in use than there are spaces to hold them. Police and Safety sold almost nine hundred commutei permits this semester even though there are only 680 commuter spaces available. Behrend is primarily a commutei college, with approximately two-thirds of the student population living offcampus. Randy Hoffman, Manager of Police and Safety, says that you should expect to oversell the commuter permits by approximately 150%. The reasons for this are that not all commuters will be here all day long, every day of the week. He sees the hours between 11 am and 2 pm as the busiest. Residents have somewhat of a different problem. There were 304 resident permits sold and only 293 spaces available. ...

LOVE ROB Butch's Freshman Assessment by Rob Prindle I'm back. The powers lhat be have decided to let me expel my words of wisdom for yet another semester. Oh, don't get me wrong, Joe Paterno wasn't too happy about it, but Joe lost a bunch of his pull at Penn State after last years traumatic season. Coming back to campus was as enjoyable as a good talk with an old friend, and, speaking of old friends, I was glad to see that my pal Butch made it back for another year. I was happy to see him, that is, until I saw that his pupils were dilated and his face was pale white and his lips were blue. When Butch is in one of those moods, it's best to avoid him for a while. I hurried to the closest door, bat after that woman threw me out of the ladie_'s room, Butch grabbed me by the bookbag and screamed: "Punks. Damn wimps. Freshmen make me want to puke-up my Lucky Charms breakfast cereal, Rob." "Those lazy no-goods come to our campus, take all the parking spaces, and then they have the ne...

Drug War In Colombia: Government Free To Take Strong Action Against Medellin Opinion by Rob Farnham Collegian Staff Writer Recently, the strife between the Colombian government and that country's immensely powerful Medellin drug cartel escalated dramatically. In the wake of a tough government crackdown on traffickers, the drug lords issued a rambling, arrogant "declaration of war" against the legitimate government and society of Colombia. This outright defiance and expression of contempt was accompanied by the bombing of government agencies and police facilities, especially in the Medellin province from which the largest of the drug clans operate. In their manifesto, the drug lords attempted to turn leftist ideology to the justification of their terroristic actions, claiming lhat their campaign is intended to bring down a corrupt government and police system that exploits and steals from the poor peasants in rural areas and the urban proletariat. Such statements are laug...

/ Missing \ / Pieces by Mark Owens Collegian Staff Writer After a rather _disturbing encounter with a 16 month-old toddler at work (which involved a teddy bear, a large mom and a pound of strawberry flavored yogurt... don't ask) I think it's time I discussed child care. As a person who has no children, doesn't plan on having any soon, and thinks the nicest term for them is "small drooling nameless bedwetters," I feel I'm the perfect expert to give advice on babies. The first thing I should point out is that babies have only one major organ: a pair of lungs. The brain, heart and other vital organs (such as _toenails) develop at the age of two. This is a proven scientific fact. Take a baby to a wedding, baptism or any other important function where at least 30 people are required to be very quiet. Soon (3 minutes and 12 seconds to be exact) the baby will start in with a howl that would Baby Talk: Mark Discusses The Myths and Methods of Successful Child-Rearing. make Richard ...
