WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY. [Newspaper Article] — Auckland Star — 17 February 1920

WELLINGTON GAS COMPANY. MUNICIPAL COMPETITION. PLAINT BY CHAIRMAN. (By TelegTairh.— I'rc c Atacrta-tlon.)" WELLINGTON, this day. T lie jinnUtil moi^t-in o- of tlip Clas rv» pany was held to-day, and declared i dividend of 2A per cent for the past half, year. The chairman of director* announced a now programme of works costini £150.000, and justified the increase m the price of gas made last year by point, ing out that the extra cost of coal Wi only bt-en very slightly exceeded by the extra revenue. Referring to competition by the municipal trade concerns, he stated that the position was getting worse every year. Last year the company pa ji £20,000 in rates and taxes, and the Auofc land Company f30,000. If the Christchurch Company paid as much as Weilington this meant that the municipal trading concerns were subsidised by th. State to the extent of £70,000 by threj of the leading gas companies alone.
