THE POLLUTION OF STREAMS [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

THE POLLUTION OF STREAMS A short time ago the FARMERS REVIEW spoke somewhat at length on the germination of certain diseases by the pollution of wells and cisterns by water contaminated by cess-pools and refuse vegetable matter , decayed scraps of meats and the like from kitchens . A remarkable case of the tracing of typhoid fever to a similar though quite remote cause comes from Bristol , England . Dr . Davis , the Medical Officer of Health for the City , traced the source of the epidemic to the supply of milk from one particular farm . He found that the farmer washed his cans in a stream which passed by his farm , and used no other water . No immediate cause of pollution was discoverable , but two miles above the farm the doctor found sewage running into the brook , and close by , also in the water , the putrid carcasses of several animals that had died of the disease that has recently been prevalent among ijtogk in Somerset . \ : | Thus it is apparent that any farmer is duty boun...

The license to organize the Association was issued hy the Secretary of the State of Illinois , April 29 , 1879 , and the certificate of incorporation was issued May 26 , 1879 . The Secretary s report shows that the society has been very active during the first year of its existence , especially when it is considered that the directors , who are scattered all over the country , have to travel , many of them great distances , to attend their meetings . The Association now own over 25 , 000 acres of land in Greeley County , Nebraska , and 3 , 678 acres of land in Adrian township , Noble County , Minn . FOREIGN CONTROL OF THE ILLINOIS TOBACCO MARKET . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

FOREIGN CONTROL OF THE ILLINOIS TOBACCO MARKET . The Governments of France , Italy , Spain and Austria really regulate the price of the kinds of tobacco used in those countries by denying to American tobac-co-raisers the right to sell their tobacco to the tobacco-dealers of those countries . Each of the governments named authorizes its agents to buy for it a given amount of tobacco at a certain maximum price , and then the Government disposes ot the tobacco to its subjects , and in this way obtains a revenue . For example : The Government of France requires 50 , 000 hogsheads of tobacco annually . It sends an agent to America to buy that quantity , agreeing to pay a certain price per ppund . The agent offers as much less as he pleases . Our to-bacco-raisers refuse hi 8 offer . The agent says in response : Very well ; you shall not then sell in France ; and , by this means , he finally beats down the price to a starvation figure . These contracts of the Governments of France , Italy ...

HELP FOR THE FARMER'S WIFE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

HELP FOR THE FARMERS WIFE . It can scarcely be possible that with the daily landing of so many thousand foreigners upon our shores , the supply ot farm labor should not be largely increased . Of course , the great majority of the immigrants land here in the expectation of establishing themselves on farms of their own , but many of the unmarried men will doubtless be glad to earn a good living and fair wages for a while , before venturing upon farms of their own . Should such be the case , there will be little cause for complaint among the farm hands , and much cause for congratulation among the farmers . The farm-laborers are , with perhaps the exception of the domestic servants in cities , the best paid class of laborers in the world , and a further supply of unskilled manual labor will hardly affect their wages in the least , while the advantage to the farmers of being able to hire an extra hand or two , even though unskilled , at a low rate of wages , will be very great . But the...

MAKE PROVISION FOR YOUR FAMILIES . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

MAKE PROVISION FOR YOUR FAMILIES . There are few situations more deplorable than that of a widow left to struggle on alone in poverty , with several children , all of them too young to help their mother in providing for their wants . The death of the father of a family is at all times a sad and terrible loss , but its first poignancy is daily intensified as time goes on , when he leaves his family in poor , if not in destitute circumstances . It is not often that young professional men , clerks or young merchants and others , who have assumed the responsibilities of a famil y , before they have attained a position to leave their families beyond tbe reach of want in case of their death , fail to have a policy of insurance on their life . We doubt very much , however , if one farmer in fifty or even in a hundred has an insur ance on his life , and yet how many there are in just such a position as would , in case of their death , leave their families in very precarious circumstances . ...

ENGLISH GRAIN TRADE [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

ENGLISH GRAIN TRADE The Mark Lane Express , May 31 st , says Showers and warm winds the past week have promoted vegetation wonderfully . If the weather from now to harvest should even be droughty it will probably be beneficial to the wheat crop . Supplies of English wheat continued small . but trade was not very animated , either in Mark Lane or in the provinces . Prices fairly steady , and only receded for inferior , of which , however , a large proportion of the offerings in London consisted . Imports of foreign have been chiefly American and Indian , but the total arrivals in London have been moderate . Owing to the absence of speculation , favorable crop prospects , and apathy of large millers , the trade lost the buoyancy which was apparent previous to the holidays , but the country demand was sufficiently strong to check any marked downward movement for the time . It prophesies a future downward tendency in prices , in consequence of good crop prospects in America and Europe ,...

INACCURACY OF SOME STATISTICAL RE -PORTS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 3 June 1880

INACCURACY OF SOME STATISTICAL REPORTS . A table recently published by the Bulletin des Halles et Marches ( Market and Exchange Bulletin ) , purports to show the average yield of the wheat crop of the world by countries , side by side with the crop for 1879 . We presume we may take it for granted that the table is proximately correct as regards European countries , but one can not but refer to the whole table with considerable hesitation , when we find at its head the following : Average Yield . For 1879 . _ Bushels . Bushels . United States 387 , 500 , 000 337 , 500 , 000 Of course , great as are the discrepancies in similar reports in our own country , even as to our own crops , no one for a moment disputes the statement that our wheat crop in 1879 exceeded 470 , 000 , 000—130 odd million bushels more than the journal quoted credits us with . That we may not be found guilty of plucking the mote out of our brother s eye while neglecting to remove the beam in our own , we quote the ...
