IN connection with the celebration of Lincoln! birthday It will not be out of place to reproduce from the New York Ilerald a part of the description of his assassination given by the poet, Walt Whitman, who was present in Ford's Theater when the foul deed was done: "There is a scene in the play ('Our American Cousin') representing a modern pnrlor, in which two unprecedented Eng lish ladies are informed by an impossible Yankee that he is not a man of fortune, and, therefore, undesirable for marriage catching purposes; after which, the com ment lining ftnhhcd, the dramatic trio make exit, leaving the stage clear for a moment, "At this period came the murder of Abraham Lincoln, Great as was all its manifold train cirvling round it, and stretching into the future for many a cen tury, in the politics, history, art, etc., of tlic New World in point of fact the main thing, the actual murder, transpired with the iiiet and simplicity of any commonest occurrence the bursting of a bud or pod i...

ARE YOU TO LIVE IN ALASKA? lume Keqnlren""1 That Are Indlapen-able-MIuera Food Mull Be Kight. The universal article of diet in that country, depended upon and indispen wble, is bread or biscuit. And to make tlie bread and biscuit, either in the cauip or upon the trail, yeast can not be used it must be baking pow der; and the powder manufactured by the'processes of the Royal Baking Pow der Company, miners and prospectors have learned, is the only one which will stand in that peculiar climate of cold and dampness and raise the bread and biscuit satisfactorily. These facts are very important for every one proposing to go to Alaska and the Yukon country to know, for should lie be persuaded by some out fitter to take one of the cheap brands of baking powder it will cost just as much to transport it, and then when lie oiions it for use, after all his labor in packing it over tho long and diffi cult route, he will find a solid caked mass or a lot of spoiled powder, with r..-. 3r.rcr.2th an...

THE POLITICAL EVILS OF TODAY. (Concluded from page 3.) is yearly increasing in the sum of of one thousand eight hundred mil lion dollars. This sum, if equally divided, would give to each person in the nation about $26 as a fund put by for accumulation, or it would give to the average family yearly $130. In 1870 ihe per capita wealth was $780, in 1890 it was $1,000. A nation's wealth comes by those who dig and delve in the mines, in the factories on the farm. As a na tion our ability to create wealth is enormous. There is enough for all , none need complain; Nature is most lavish wiih her bounty. The wages of several hundred thousand have been reduced 20 per cent in the last month, and the div idends of mill owners and manufac turers increased. Do not many of you right in this county remember the song that went up from McKin ley orators? They told you and me J that the next day after the election if McKinley was elected that wages in this county would be $2 per day; that in every cit...

GEORGE WASHINGTON. A Study of His Personality as Soldier, States man and Citizen. i j MONO great historleul characters there is noue exerting a wider or more potent influence upon succeeding generations . than that of George Washington. It is conceded that all history furnishes not another character so symmetrical in all hts parts as that of the first President of the United States. Asa patriot, a citizen, a soldier and a statesman, Washing ton stands out in bold relief on the pages of history, the greatest American that ever lived. It is this magnificent equipoise of character attributes that most strikingly im presses the student of his personality and achievements. . It may be said of Washington as was said of Louis Phillipe: "He had no youth; he was born a man." Washington re ceived only a common school education. He was ever sen sitive of his educational limitations, nnd even after he had served as commander-in-chief of the army, acted as President for two terms and indelibly s...
