The Washington Teachers' Associa tion are endeavoring to get concerted action in raising salaries of competent and experienced instructors for the pub lic schoals of the slate and will also en deavor to insure better results by the adoption of their methods. Many inex perienced teachers are over paid but the fact remains that those who are masters of their profession are unable to com mand a liv n 3 ' wage compared with other professions. A committee was ap pointed on this subject at the recent meeting in Seattle and they are endeav oring to promote the idea before the public. The Great Northern has indulged in a wholesale laying off station men on this division during the past month. The small attendance at the joint meet ing of the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Directors of School District No. 1 at the court house Monday evening de ferred action on the proposed establish ment of a high school at an expenditure of probably $18,000, until next Tuesday evening, the regular Chamber of Com merce night. The board of directors es pecially request the attendance at that time of everyone interested in school matters. The Board have submitted three plans for action and they wish an expression of views by a majority of the representative citizens of the town. LOCAL TOPICS. Zent, I.ovell & Linn, representing the plaintiff, won the case of Gustave Plager vs. Leo. Walton and wife in Spokane Monday. The question involved the title to a homestead which had been contested. The Spokane Chronicle has the following to say regarding it: "A sealed verdict wns turned in at 5:30 last night by the jury in Judge Belt's court. This morn ing the communication was opened by the court. The jury found a verdict in favor of the plaintiff, in which he was awarded a judgment against the defen dant for 5i561:50. Principal amounting to $1350 and interest at the rate of 6 per cent since the 22d of June, 1901. Suit was brought by the plaintiff to recover $1400, money paid for a clear title to a quarter section of land in Adams county.
