An examination of tho soil and sub-soil would probably show us numerous large roots, extending in all directions through the soil, and a few down into tho sub-soil the latter in search of. moisture, mineral food and perhaps to anchor the tree more firmly to the earth ; while branching from the larger roots, the soil would be filled with a network of smaller roots, or rootlets, and still branching from these, a magnifying glass would reveal mimerous root-hairs, or slender fibrils, that perform a very important part in absorbing moisture, and nutriment from the earth for the tree. A tree, lifted clear Irom the ground with all its roots intact, would show a great resemblance between the fo...

*smsmmmmsmsmm%kkmsmmwmmmmmwkktmsmmmssmmm IKIOAY KVKNIXG, DEC. 29, 1871. OLD BLVNDFORD CHURCH. The following lines were written on the eastern side of the smith door of Old Hlandford Church, in Petersburg, by the comedian Tyrone Ppwen. during a visit thirty or forty years ago. Biandfbrd Church was erected in the vcar 17:17, and continued to lie used as a place of worship until 1802, when Petersburg having extended westward, the inhabitants determined to build another church. This was done—Blandford was abandoned—and the building was left to battle wilh storm, and rain, and snow. Age and these hostile influences soon told upon it.
