"The I'uconqnercd Rebel" Ahead. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 3 March 1860

"The I'uconqnercd Rebel" Ahead. Wc are shown to be neither a |>roj>het. a seer nor an oracle, by a surmise which we made a day or two ago. We said that we feared a show of indifference toward "the Douglas creaturein the Democratic State Convention. We were mistaken. To speak after the manner of the jocular Hat-boat navigators of the western waters, Douglas "has got em where the wool is short." The great antil.ecomptoti expounder has triumphed in a convention of avowed Administration Democrats. We may likewise add that the right* of Prosy, in Yuba, have received representation and vindication, tiood for Proxy ! Good for the diminutive Giant! In an article setting forth our views concerning our .Senators and Senatorial aspirants, we remarked that when Latham was elected to the upper house of Congress, the death knell of old fogyism in California was rung. The action of the State Convention confirms us in that belief. The worn out political hacks of the Atlantic S...

Rob Roy McGregor, Oh S [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 3 March 1860

Rob Roy McGregor, Oh S We went to witness Ander.-on in Rob Roy, on Thursday night. He presented that most exquisite and side-splitting farce to perfection, and established himself as the lirst of comedians. As he and hit family. assisted by a corps of amateur actors of Marysville. rendered that celebrated play, no daily editor's pen can adequately describe. Like Cleopatra's person. •• it beggard all description." Wc shall attempt but a mere outline of the performance, and shall only touch upon of its more prominent features. The play opens with some seven citizens of Marysville, vainly and discordantly attempting to siug a snatch from a Scotch comic song, in which they are lustily and ludicrously assisted ly the Great \\ izard of the North, behind the scenes. Our seven fellow-citizens admirably perform the dumb-show of drinking Scotch whiskey out of empty tin cups, and then, after forming a tarblow, promiscuously vanish out of the upper stage entrance, or back door. Soon after this,...

It represents him as a shrewd looking good natured man, smooth shaved and short haired—the latter curley, and, we should judge, white. He looks like a man fitted to take the world easy, and with too much sense to let the little spirtings of debabative passion disturb his equilibrium while in the performance of his official duties. A good looking man is Pennington.
