MELTING OF THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 12 November 1873

MELTING OF THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. Sc :'oml I* «.> On tin* la if liMN nl. It was perfectly delightful, yesterday, on the fair "'round. The weather was all that could have been desiredbalmy, and neither too warm nor cool. The visitors commenced coining in early in various kinds of vehicles and on horseback. One man brought in an immense load nf grapes in a wagon and another turned an honest penny With a carryall full of luscious peaches; and thus it was a few practical-minded men combined business and pleasure. The number of pedestrians was small, in the morning; still there were some of botli sexes. A more interesting event for the spectators than the participants was an impromptu TCRKEY PIG HT about 9a. m. The manner in which the turkeys combed each other's heads was as lively and pertinacious as if they had been contending for some high order of decoration. The gate keepers, too, for a time were a center of attraction as they related their experi...

The Riak. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 12 November 1873

The Riak. WATER-POWER SF.WINU MACHINES, These are still a very great attraction, and are exhibited by Henry Campbell, who expects to take a premium and diploma on the method by which they are run. The running of sewing machines bytbe force of water, in the simple and costless manner it is exhibited here, is a California invention, that Of Mr. Hyde, of Oakland. The first model for running them in this manner was made byMr. Campbell. The force of the water, simply as it oomes through the pipes of tm city, is sufficient to run three machines at once, bytbe manner in which force is gained by the reduction in the size of the stream that operates the machinery. At the same time the stitches made' by each machine range from sixteen to eighteen hundred a minute. No housekeeper but should examine Into this invention, and t his done it cannot fail of the appreciation il so highly merits. Enterprise In Phonography. Short hand writing was witnessed only a few years ago, in legislative assemblie...

Having no journal of her own to present herelaims to the public, she has fallen a prey to the envy ami jealousy of other parts.
