A No. 1 boot Is to a large extent« female hallucination. It li to a much larger extent, perhaps, a (smals cur«e, for those who dare not undergo Its miseries grow cooner or later to believe that they do, and lire cannot burn out of them the conviction that their shoes are No. 1. Nobody but ttu. .woman herself knows what tortures are undergone by the slave with a No. 2 foot who Is chained to a No. 1 shoe. Professional women who exhibit their feet are, of course, more subject to this tyranny of tb« shoe than other women, and it may not be generally known that them are emotional auJ tragio actresses who, when all other u.eaim of simulating agony and awakening pity fall, rush to the No. I boot They put that nu and a sad, far-away look of unutterable Vlospair comes into their eyes, neuralgia shadows play about their mouths, ...

Tiik San Francisco !'■> i desiivcs more praise from-the public than any journal in Hie Slate, for itboldness in (\\|M>sing the iniquitous "straw bond" luisiness bo long carried on around the police courts of S:m Francisco. We know however from Bad experience with the San Francisco public that, such service or iinv public pervicc by the press is. taken only as so much news, read and Boon forgotten. There is not a journal in that city that could not years ago have made, if they dared, the same exposure; nor is there one now that could not tell of favored gambling and opium dens, official bribery and rottenness :ilid licensed crime. The press of San Francisco cannot afford to be the sleuth-hound that Spencer would have it. They are forced by an ungrateful public to bo but kenneled curs that wag their tails at. a kicking into submission ,'.rid .-ilcncc. The I'ost might go on and follow the Pall Mali. YACHTING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 16 July 1885

YACHTING. The Frolic had her jigger boom bolts drawn from the deck by the boom striking against the wharf last Saturday as the vessel was in charge of the Lotus club. On board the yacht Halcyon there was a very enjoyable party on Tuesday, and a number of Mr. Grant's friends were most royally entertained. A splendld sail was taken and with music and general festivity the champion yacht of the Pacific gave a fitting reception to her admirers. The party landed on Angel Island and were joined by a number of resident ladies and gentlemen and all participated in a fine time and good lunch. The ladies took charce of the galley to serve up an addition to the lunch of some of the fine fish caught on the trip. Prof....
