Principles, Not Men. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 4 August 1860

Principles, Not Men. Prior to 1824 it had been the custom of Congress to make caucus nominations, and it fell into disrepute upon the nomination by that body, of Mr. Wm. H. Crawford, for the Presidency. Hitherto the people had acquiesced in, and endorsed these nominations upon the presumption that that body, composed as it then was of the most learned and dignified statesmen, was the most competent to judge of the fitness of the varied candidates for that dignified and exalted position. In theory, and the primitive simplicity of our government, when principles actuated the fathers in all they did j this was a salutary rule—but then a disposition to hunt the office for self aggrandizement, and the money and power it insured to its possessor became so palpable, that a minority refused to go into caucus, and the friends of Mr. Crawford nominated him without opposition. The result was, that four candidates—Messrs. Adams, Jackson, Clay and Crawford ran, neither of them receiving the requ...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 4 August 1860

Members of the County Central Committee will take notice that n meeting of the Committee is called for Monday next. We acknowledge the receipt of a specimen of chewing Tobacco, new brand, the "Gold Bar," from Messrs. Bernstein, Clapp & Hockctt. We would recommend a trial of the new brand to the lovers of the weed. It is currently reported that we are to have a new hotel in town, to be erected immediately. The want of an additional hotel has been apparent for n long time, and we sincerely hope that one may be erected. 'Our friends who have been sojourning at Mono this summer complain bitterly that hey have not received our paper. We can assure them that the papers have been reg-; ularly mailed, and we have also sent papers there by the Sonora Express. There are also many complaints about the carriage of letters —neither the mail nor the Express have carried letters promptly, to and from Mono. The Lumber Mill, known as the People's Mill, is now in successful operation, and...

A PARODY ON NORA McSHANE. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 4 August 1860

A PARODY ON NORA McSHANE. THE LAMENT OF A VISALIAN AT MONO. AIR—RORY M'SHANE I have left dear Visalia a long way behind me, To better my fortunes I've come to this clime, But I find I am sucked in, no dear friend can find me, And here I am stuck, and I'm not worth a dime. O! I think of the cows that at home I have tended, And think of the galls that have milked in the morn; And, ah ! don't I think on the path I have wended, Of my dear young Melissa, I've left all forlorn. I sigh for the flap-jacks so cheerfully cooking, When wearied I come in by the bright cheerful fire; When I saw by the fire-light my charmer well looking, And looked so seraphic by the side of her sire. In truth I believe that I'm half broken hearted, And I must go back to Visalia again, For I've never been happy at all since I parted, From the sweet little cherub I've left on the plain. O ! there's something so dear where I've left my dear charmer, That knocks off the boots of this famed land of gold, That my hear...
