• .1 November, 1982 ^ Southwest Chinese Journal Page 7 The Festival for Poets by Weining Chang Chrysanthemums and wine, cool autumn nights and clear skies, it is the season, the season of fulfillment, matu- rity and wisdom, and the festival of poets. The ninth day of the ninth moon is the festival for poets. The Chinese are a people who cherish and revere their men and women of words. A person is often more respected for one's literary talents than for the power one commands or the money one holds. A most civilized people, the Chinese appreciate poetry, an abstract form of art, more so than painting or sculpturing. The unique Chinese language makes poetry writing an exquisite art. The language is unique in two ways: One word has only one sound. This makes the words easier to rhyme; It is also a tonal language which makes the poems musical in their own right. The second unique character of the language is that the written characters were evolved from simplified sketches of the real o...

November,198 2 r£j ^ Southwest Chinese Journal Page 9 PSYCHOLOGY By WEINING C. CHANG. Ph.D. Psychologist A Bird With Borrowed Feathers Somewhere I have heard a story about a bird with borrowed feathers. The bird, a pheasant, if my memory serves me correctly, thought she was not pretty enough. Hoping to make herself prettier, she looked around to pick up feath- ers by other birds to put on herself. She spent all her time looking and picking the right feathers to put on. At different times she spent on different feathers of dif- ferent birds, she looked differently each time. But she never seemed to be able to find the right feather that would give her the "right look." She spent all her life looking and died a very unhappy bird. I often find more than a few of us are like this phea- sant in the way we look at ourselves. Instead of the right feather, it is the right image we seek for ourselves. I am one of those persons who wander around shopping cen- ters, looking and trying on all k...

Remember the eupho- ria of the assembly in San Francisco and the high hopes it had for all the potential good things that they knew could be accomplished? Of late -re have been many areas in which the work of th<^ as we now know it, has been lambasted. Groups h e organized to see to its demise. Some call it ineffectual. Some say it's impotent. The U.N. is funded by the United States to the tune of over half its annual budget with other countries chipping in a pittance and some not at all. Many are in arrears in its assessments and quite possible, because of the generosity of the United States, maybe they think that we'll pick up the tab for them. Whatever the case, in many quarters, it is not a popular organization. Be that as it may, is there any other world body to turn to in timesof crises? In a civiliz...
