Moon said that because of the president's sag- ging approval ratings, many Republican candi- dates are distancing themselves from him. That's good news for Democrats, who in earlier races found themselves battling their opponent and the president's popularity. Bailey said that with Republicans outnumber- ing Democrats in the U.S. House by only seven seats, "It is close enough we can make a change. With the president's popularity continuing to drop and the scandals among the Republicans, it could get real interesting. The Democrats have a chance of taking the majority in the House again." A Democratic takeover in the Senate is less likely, he said. Governor Rick Perry, a Republican, won his primary race with more than 80 percent of the vote against three candidates. But gay Democrats remain confident that Chris Bell, who has been endorsed by Stonewall, has a good shot at unseating the incumbent. Author-songwriter Kinky Friedman and Comptroller Carole Keaton Strayhorn, a former Republ...

By Cara Rubinsky Associated Press HEW HAVEN, Conn. — Jeffrey Busch and Stephen Davis of Wilton say the civil union that gives them the same legal rights as married cou- ples in Connecticut also makes them feel inferior to heterosexuals. Busch and Davis were among eight couples Tuesday challenging the state's ban on gay mar- riage in Superior Court. A bill that last year legalized civil unions but defined marriage as only between a man and a woman "is nothing less than the government's announcement tha...

the civil union law, but say the state's refusal to issue the same marriage licenses to gay and het- erosexual couples is unconstitutional. Assistant Attorney General Jane Rosenberg defended that refusal, arguing that there is no fundamental right to marry under Connecticut law and that marriage has traditionally been defined as between a man and a woman. "What the plaintiffs are apparently seeking is for Connecticut to change the definition of mar- riage itself," she said. She said it was reasonable for the state to cre- ate civil unions to give gay couples the legal rights of marriage while also dealing with admin- istrative issues, such as federal Medicaid and Medicare programs, which do not recognize gay marriage. Jenkins Pittman said she is struggling with whether giving gay couples the same legal rights as heterosexual couples but calling them some- thing different is so harmful that it requires a court remedy. Klein argued that the word marriage carries such weight in society...

nationalnews Anti-gay protesters banned from school grounds during soldier's funeral A Kansas-based church that has disrupted the funerals of U.S. soldiers in other states will be barred from the grounds of Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in Norway, Maine, during the funeral Saturday of a soldier from Norway who was killed in Iraq. The Westboro Baptist Church, of Topeka, Kan., said it plans to send delegates to Sgt. Corey Dan's funeral to express its belief that American soldiers are being struck down by God as retribu- tion for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. The superintendent of the school said that if the protesters want to demonstrate, they will have to do so off school property. "We do not have an open forum that allows open demonstration and there's no provision for that," Mark Eastman said. Local police departments were prepared to keep order Saturday in the event the protesters show up, Paris Police Chief David Verrier said. And members of the Patriot Guard ...

heatthnews Health professionals meet to assess status on GLBr issues Attendees at National Coalition for LGBT Health meeting hear about Healthcare Quality Index and legislation before Congress By Bob Roehr Special Contributor The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association is working with the Human Rights Campaign and other organizations to develop a Healthcare Quality Index to rate hospitals on their policies regarding GLBT patients and employees, Joel Ginsburg, executive director of the association, said at a meeting last weekend of the National Coalition for LGBT Health. The index would be based on a survey by the Human Rights Campaign for its workplace proj- ect, Ginsberg said. It would be compatible with the standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, he said. Kathleen DeBold, executive director of the Mautner Project for lesbians with cancer, said the business model is most appropriate for larger institutions, like hospitals. But it could be adapt- ...

Banning gay adoptions proves to be more difficult challenge Proposed Ohio legislation banning adoptions in homes where any gay people reside would prevent Vice President Cheney from adopting Following their successful attempts to ban gay marriage across the country, social conser- vatives are now trying to ban gays from adopting children. In the case of both bans, it's tiring for gay folks to be vilified for, of all things, wanting to give love. By this logic, Mother Teresa should've been strung up by her sandals. At present, it appears barring gay adoption isn't going as swimmingly as barring gay mar- riage, thank goodness. As this fight unfolds, and all manner of things are said about us, I'm pleased to note that gays and our allies have held onto something important: the ability to wrest giggles from a bad situation. Let's consider Ohio. Ah, Ohio, where, in 2004, a particularly stri- dent anti-gay marriage amendment helped George Bush capture the state, and thus the nation. Ah, O...

life+stylemusic 2006 SXSW NOTEBOOK Austin s big llOWd Queer acts enjoy appreciative fans at 20th annual South by Southwest AUSTIN — Over the course of its 20-year his- tory, the South by Southwest music festival earned a reputation where little indie bands can make a big splash. Though SXSW still caters to industry insiders, it's ordinary fans who have really driven the festival's growth, snatching up all-access wristbands by the thousands and delivering enthusiastic crowds that performing artists crave. As the annual event has flowered, so too has the participation by queer artists. In previous years, the bulk of gay acts were often segregat- ed into a one-night, all-queer bill held at single venue. Things have definitely changed. This year's fest, March 15-18, queer acts were often bundled into like-sounding lineups — everything from punk rock to country, where gay and straight music-lovers alike spread across clubs in downtown Austin. While determined to sweat, party and rock out...

Martha Wainwright songs, one could tell why. With a feather touch Germano conveyed almost as much in the way she sang as she did in her quiet, guarded lyrics. Following Germano, Rufus' sister Martha Wainwright took an almost freewheeling approach to her perform- ance. Guitar plugged in, Wainwright mustered her characteristic verve and immediately launched into the anguished bal- lad "Bloody Motherfiicking Asshole." Equipment troubles would also affect Wainwright, though she han- dled it in stride. After breaking a guitar string, the singer passed the guitar to an audience member to restring, then ordered a shot of tequila from the bar. There's no more straight-talking rocker than Chrissie Hynde. In the lead-up to The Pretenders' Saturday night SXSW finale, Hynde had already made headlines in the Austin Chronicle. Asked about the revitalization of her native Akron, Ohio, Hynde gave props to gay communities, saying that they had "saved America from destroying itself." She proved no le...

mayor, she gets to Frazier, promising to help his career in return for cooperation, and he gets her into the bank to meet Russell. She has better luck negotiating with bim than Frazier does. "Inside Man" isn't over, even when it seems to be over. There are still several surprises and ironies ahead. One suspects the ending was com- promised for box-office reasons, but the real ending that seems inevitable could occur at any moment after the fadeout. (I wouldn't be sur- prised to find an alternate ending on the DVD.) The script by Russell Gewirtz is a brilliant mix of the familiar and the innovative, with enough humor to relieve the tension without breaking it. (For instance, after a conversation with his adversary Frazier reports, "I've got him right where I want him." Where's that? "Right behind me with my pants around my ankles — but it's a start") Washington gives his usual impeccable per- formance. Owen does it the hard way with very little face time, but makes it look easy. University, Dobson sent an unsolicited letter to Theatre Three, inquiring about a possible job opening. Alder quickly wrote back, politely inviting Dobson to "look him up" if he ever got to town. Dobson arrived in Dallas for his stepsister's wedding a few weeks later, and took Alder up on the offer. The timing could not have been better: Alder needed a pianist that weekend to accom- pany a small cast in Noel Coward revue — was Dobson available? "I said sure, although I didn't even know who Noel Coward was at the time," Dobson says, gleefully calling himself "a rube back then." That was 1980, and Dobson has been at Theatre Three ever since. "I honestly didn't think I'd stay in Dallas," he says. "I wanted to go to New York like all actors and musicians." But his time here — during which Dobson has witnessed numerous changes in the Dallas gay community, including the rise of AIDS — forms the kernel around which his play is built. The show is what Dobson calls "confession- al cabaret." ...

THEFT DRUGS ASSULT SEX CRIMES stage Thanespotting fheatre Britain gets hot and bothered with a homoerotic 'Macbeth,' Theatre Three builds a better 'Mousetrap' By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer Peter Barrett Attorney at Law 3500 Oak Lawn Suite 700 Dallas, Texas 75219 214-748-8871 With all the British accents and royal intrigue around this week, Dallas stages are looking like refugees from "Masterpiece Theater." That could be a bad thing. Too much perfect- diction and stiff upper-lip folderol can grate faster than the cheese steward at an Italian restau- rant. Thankfully, two current productions mostly avoid becoming musty warhorses by injecting sex and comedy. Not everyone in Theatre Britain's Macbeth has to fake an accent. It has a genuine Brit as Lady Macbeth (Sue Birch). Otherwise, this pro- duction bears little relation to the stuffy Elizabethan emoting associated with Shakespeare. This is a modern, fast-moving and sexy version of Shakespeare's shortest, bloodiest tragedy. There...
