Dover CAPTURE OF SEA LION. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 22 March 1934

Dover m ? / CAPTURE OF SEA LION. Last Thursday morning an un usual visitor, having the appearance of a seal, was noticed in Esperance Bay, and some residents of Dover put off in boats to get a closer view of it. However, it disappeared with out being identiled. Later in the evening a lad employed by Mr Rapp was going across to Rabbit Island, when he noticed what appeared to be a log lying in the shallow water. On getting closer to1 it the creature made a roar that caused the boy to lose no time in getting ashore. He informed some sportsmen of his discovery, and a small party armed with rifles re turned to the spot and despatched the creature with a bullet. It turned out to be a sea lion, about 8 feet in length, and 4001b. in weight. It was afterwards towed to Mr Rapp's jetty. PERSONAL. NEW ZEALAND EXPORT OF APPLES. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 22 March 1934

NEW ZEALAND EXPORT OF APPLES. The 'Orchardist' (N.Z.) reports up to the 1st inst. that export apples have been coming forward much ? ' more slowly than anticipated, with the result that there has been diffi culty in filling the shipping space al lotted. This position has arisen, not because of a lighter crop than antici pated, but on account of the fact that there is a large proportion of small fruit, and growers are leaving it on the trees as long as possible in \ the hope that it will size up. A fair proportion of Cox's Orange has been picked, but only light pickings, of Dunn's, Jonathan, and other varie ties have been made. By early March all exporters will be hard pressed, to handle the crop, as the slow start will mean an increased rush later on. There were several light but wel come rains in the early part of February, which are helping to bring the sizes up a little. The crop is' a very clean one, and the fruit is of * exceptionally good quality, the' only real trouble at pre...
