Sunlight and Shadow. "Laddie." (For FIGARO.) [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 17 October 1885

Sunlight and Shadow. ' Xaddie." (For Figaro.) High noon, and not a cloud in the sky. Not a breath of wind to agitate the dried-up leaves of the trees, p,nd"wbo them like a lover." Only the rays of the burning sun shining down on a ravine; one precipitous wall of which rises almost perpendicu larly, while the other, which slopes more, is none the ' less rugged, albeit it may be less steep. The rays of the sun fall upon the great masses of rock, whose shadows lengthen as'the evening progresses. As a matter of fact, the sunshine will not gleam very long on the ravine. Two hours more and the moun tain will conceal the sun from the view of any per son in the gorge. Daylight will remain for a long time after, but it will be daylight in the shadow of the rocks. But now it is sunlight. It is , shining and baking what alluvial deposit there is in the bottom of the ravine. Walk barefoot over the surface of the rocks, and its small stones, and you will have someadea of the power of the solar r...

Eighth Lesson. Advice to the Shearer. (Continued.) The manager of the.station has nothing whatever to) do with you, except in the two cases1 of the original agreement, and paying you when you go. Hence, if you see him walk into your pen to examine your shorn sheep, you should call the attention of the boss of the shed to the' fact, and say, " I thought you were our boss." ,: ' . ; This will make him feel uncomfortable, and it is not good .policy to call out to the station manager, " Come 3out of thator, "What the -r- dp you want there ?" After the keen appetites of those foot ballers present had been satisfied by the good things provided, the usual loyal and customary toasts followed, with neat and appropriate speeches from the Chairman (Mr. J. How to "Regulate" the Social Evil. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 17 October 1885

How to "Regulate" the Social Evil. . Brisbane lias had a viituous spasm. I -will not say that it didn't need virtue very badly, and that even a spasm won't do it some good. But when one gets spasms, one needs a. little medical attention, and, if spasms are misdirected, the original malady may make room for a worse one. Brisbane has been poking its nose into moral etink-tub3—has been ladling up moral filth that has turned its stomach. Bad smells and revolting offal will turn even a strong stomach. And this moral turn has produced the virtuous spasm. The notorious Pall Mall Gazette articles on the fearful vice to be found in London, made a hubbub. Some uneasy scavengers followed suit here in Bris bane, and tales were told that must naturally shock the ears of common-place, decent, and vice-ignorant people. Tales were told that set the young and innocent agog with wonder. Tales were told that advertised flaunted filth, and, possibly, made its horrible "business" boom in consequence of ...

'* Pear God; Speak evil of none; Stick to the Truth; and never be done." BRISBANE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 1885. Barring Out an Industry. TSeb Cabtoon.^ Some months ago, Elliott Bros. & Co., sulphuric acid manufacturers at Balmain, an aquatic suburb of Sydney, became desirous of establishing a sulphuric acid factory in Queensland, and sent up a repre sentative to look around for a site. A suitable one was found at Brookhill, Kedron Brook, Lutwyche. In accordance with laws made to regulate factories that may become nuisances, an application was made to the Ithaca Divisional Board for per mission to carry on the manufacture of sulphuric acid at Brookhill, In order to guide it respecting a decision, the Ithaca Divisional Board very wisely sent some Commissioners over to Balmain in order to inspect the factory of Elliott Bros, there, and to make enquiries whether a sulphuric acid factory is or is not a nuisance; and to find out, if it is a nuisance, what is the best way to regulat...
