Whii.e the homestead selectors have a champion in Mv. Dight, tlic old selectors who took up land ' under the 1861 Act, but neglected to bring it under any of the later Acts, have. Mr. O'Sullivan taking tip the cudgels on their behalf and asking for concessions for them. Ho is to move that where holders of the old 9d. leasehold homestead selec tions have paid £1 per acre their land should be converted into freeholds, and in cases where less than £1 per acre has been paid they should have the right to convert their holdings into freeholds on paying up tlie £1 per acre. These resolutions no doubt, if carried, would bo a good thing for those occu piers who still hold those minor or 320 aero selections as such, but whether it is -advisable or fair to the colony is another question. The applicants for these lands in those days were enabled to take up 320 acres of land, regardless of ago, at £1 per acre, so that a family might secure a half-section for . every member of it. THE DISPUTE IN THE WOOL TRADE. Extract from the Sydney Wool and Stock Journal, August 26th, 1898. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 9 September 1898

THE DISPUTE IN THE WOOL TRADE. i Extract from the Sydney Wool and Stock j Journal, August 26th, 18l)S. We reproduce from Wednesdays Daily I'elcrjrajrft lhc . report of nn interview with Mr, F. \V. Learoyd, chairman of the Sydney Wool Buyers' Association,, in which is. ex pressed the reasons why the body he repre sents is at;issue with the Co-operative Wool and Produce Company, Limited. . As will be seen on perusal, the case is put vtry clearly from a buyer's standpoint by Mr. Learo.vd, and nothing, . perhaps,, stands out nn,re clearly than the fait that, from' the many considerations which have to' lie taken into account by a buyer in fixing the limit up to which he can bid, it is impossible for him to take the Jd. into his, calculations, and, as a consequence, thci l.i is really paid by the buyer. His reference to the fact that buyers of wools costing 3Jd. and under wish a charge made per.bale instead of per pound is fur ther evidence that' buyers of such wools at least have to pay...

THE BUYERS' POINT OF VIEW. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 9 September 1898

THE BUYERS' POINT OF VIEW. On Tuesday a representative of the Daily Telegraph called upon Mr. F. W. Learoyd, chairman of the AVool Buyers' Association, to ascertain his views on the disp-ite which has led to the boycott of the Co-op'-raUve Wool an 1 Produce Company's sales. Mr. Learoyd is the Sydney .buvcr for verv im portant French and German wool houses, nnd has held this position for ri good, many years. He is, therefore, well in touch with both this and the Continental markets, and is in a position to speak for the vast interests which the Buyers' Association represent in this market. Mr. Learoyd said that lie had been in doubt whether it would be an advantage or otherwise for the wool buyers to remain silent during the existing dispute, which they all regretted, but it had been pointed out to them that statements had been mado which, from their point of view, were not correct, and he would, therefore, briefly refer to the position as the buyers found it. If we went back some ni...

THE WOOL BOYCOTT AND THE WAY TO MEET IT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 9 September 1898

THE WOOL . BO YCOTT AN D THE' WAY TO MEET IT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD; Si :, — A short-time since I wrote -urging that every wooUgrower in the country who could do so should ship his wool to London and refuse ti sell in the Sydney markets, wli' re the associated Wool buyers eiid tiic 1 associated wool brokers have combined, and now I would like to say n few words as to methods of proceedure. The associated Wool brokers in nctinir with the bn vers have vir tu.ally ceased to be sellers' agents nnd have become agents for the buyers, and that I think is worse than if they hai become buyers themsi-lves, and is a state of things which should not be tolerated. We must have a free market, and we must fight for it this year .and next year and every year until we got it. Our agents must be our agents only — ''No mnn can, serve two masters, for either he will halo the one nnd love the. other or ho will cleave to the one nnd despise the other.' This is ns true to-day as when it wns written,...
