' Replying to representatives of the .wool, industry who waited on ' him this afternoon and asked for a- reduction in. the freight on wool, ' i ? . the Minister for Railways (Mr. Godfrey Morgan) said he was pre pared to recommend to the Government a reduction of 10 per cent on all wool freights, provided that the celling agencies were prepared to make a similar reduction in their charges. . BECKETT'S BUDGET. PROPERTY SEIZED. SYDNEY, Januarv lti. Detectives with a special warrant visited the premises of ' Beckett's Budget ' and seized property, which, it is believed, will for a time interfere with the publication of the newspaper. The proceedings were taken by the Crown Law authorities. A summons lias been issued, against one of lhe prin cipols of the publication. SYDNEY, January 17. - The maximum penalty of £20 wa-- imposed on Beckett's Newspapers to day in tin; Summons Court for having been the occupiers of premises where indecent publications have been found. The magistrate (Mr. Laid law) made a' order . for the forfeiture of certain matrices and blocks, which had bee'* seized by the police. He said apart from the objectionable advertisements, the printed mntlsr was not so bad as it was when he was called upon to judge it on n former occasion, but in view oi the paper's previous conviction in March Inst yrar he imposed the maximum fine. ?

DEMENTED MOTHER DESPERATE ATTEMPT. SYDNEY, Januarv lti. The timely action of a lorry dn\er to-day saved a girl, aged eight, fruru a. terrible death at the hands of her lemeiiled mother, who was endeavouring Lo force the child to swallow poison. While driving a vehicle, the lorrynian heard a girl crying for help and saw n woman clutching the child tightly round the neck, while in the other hand Ciia flolrl SI ft\\Aar\ nu nai- ' iinn4uiniii» nr.i son. She attempted to force the poison down, the girl's neck by blowing it down her throat. Whenever the child opened her moutJi some of the substanw flew down her throat. When the lorry arrived the girl was in a pitiable condition. Her mouth whs burned and blackened, and she was in a state of collupse frotti fear and pain. The lorry driver lore the child from the woman's grasp, and tlie demented mother then tried to poison herself, bin without success. The child was admitted to liospiliil and tlie mother was taken to the recep tion house.
