THE CARMELITES. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 18 December 1872

THE CARMELITES. The -following leader from the Age, j and Mr Marcus Clarke's answer, will ! explain the origin of -the above sect : — It is the boast of the press of Eng land that it is a truthful press, that Without any law to Drohibit it from speaking falsely, except the law of libel/ it has in the1 main carefully avoided the circulation of spurious and unfounded statements. Some harmless ' big gooseberry ' of a hard-up penny-a-liner may occasion allv find its wav info the columns of reputable papers ; but, as a rule, anything appearing as news maybe regarded as at least true in the esti mation Of the writer. The charac ter which the English press has thus earned has hitherto been not un worthily emulated in the colony of Victoria. It is a somewhat startling phenomenon, to suddenly find one journalist of acknowledged ability and repute wantonly deserting: the beaten track of veracity, and even attaching his name to items of news of an audaciously mendacious char acter. The gentlem...

A Good Story. — A very good story, says the Aramt A'tv*-rtiset\ is told of a gentleman who resides to the northward on a large sheep station. He is represented as being fond of whisky, and with the view of maturing a cask and giving it the flavour of ace, he caused it to be buried in his garden. Ten years passed, when a liirthdav, combined with the high price of wool, rendered it, in the opinion of the fl:-ckmaster, a fitting time for unearthing Jameson's Dundalk malt. A number of friends were invited to take part in the resurrection, and opinions were hazarded and bets made as to the improvement which the long period -f interment would cause in the liquor. Judges and umpires were chosen for the duty, the digging commenced, and the cask reached, but it had a hollow ring that boded some thing amiss. Further and more furious digging soon unearthed the deceitful barrel, which was found to be empty. In searching for the cause the barrel was used roughly and broken, when a sealed bottle ...

That one of the colonies of Australia, thus early in their career, should be discussing the propriety of having- the nucleus of a standing army is a significant fact in itself. What have we done to offend— what are we likely to do to offend any nation, that our budding empire should require 'to spend a considerable portion of our means in paying a body of trained soldiers to nrotect our lives and pro perties ? This is a sotnewhat pertinent ques tion in the consideration ol the proposed standing army for New South Wales. At the same time it is, to a great extent, begging the question, because we know very well that though we might not desire to give offence to any nation, or power, the state of the world is not such as to justly our considering this feeling to be mutual in regard to nations — even among the most enlightened powers of the world. France and Germany stand foremost m science and art as well as in every other res pect, such as make a great people; yet we have seen, very r...
