Export of Butter. In the House of Representative Inst Thursday, Mr. Parker Moloney asked the following question:—In view of the statement of the butter exporters that they gave ample notice to the Orient Company of their desire to ship butter by the " Osterlv," and of the refusal of the agents of the comp.iny to accept butter for that steamer, I ask the Post master-General if he has now been suc cessful in arranging for the provision of space for butter on the " Osterley.". Mr. Spence said he was glad to be able to say that space has been arranged for. The shippers of meat, on matters being put before them, couseuted to cancella tion of part of their space, and the Orient Company has agreed to accept an aggregate of 300 tons of butter.

SWANPOOL. The continuous dry weather is beginning to play havoc with the grass and crops in this district, and unless rain comes soon the lookout for the future may be regarded as very serious. The many friends of Mr. M. Crosbie will regret to hear that he is shortly to take his departure from Swanpool, he having sold his I blacksmithing business. Mr. Cros bie has decided to take on farming pursuits in Strathbogie where he has a block of his own. All who know Mr. and Mrs. Crosbie and their kind and obliging disposition will wish them every good fortune in their new undertaking. At a well-attended meeting of the annual Boxing Day sports, it was decided to hold sports as usual. Owing to Boxing Day being a Sat urday this year it was considered advisable to hold the sports on the Monday following. Roasted in Straw Stack. i CHASING A PIG. ITS FEARFUL RESULT. Two boys named Lush and Bush at Corowa on Tuesday chased a small pig round a straw stack and it ran into a hole in the stack. Im mediatly afterwards flames shot oat from the hole and the two boys wore burnt to death. Another boy, named Kernaghan. was also engaged, in the chase. The three boys were each about 3 years old and were cousins. Imrnediatly after Lush and Bush had entered the hole, Kernagban saw smoke coming from the stack and rushed away to give the alarm. Before the mothers could realise what had happened, or get an ex planation from the child, the stack was well alight. Neighbours were soon on the spot, and an effort was made to rescue the boys, but without suc cess., When the fire was extin guished, the bodies, charred beyond recognition, were recovered. WANGARATTA. The annual meeting of the Han sen Dairy Co. was held on Monday. The transactions for the year showed a profit of .£70. For milk .£5135 was paid, and for cream £11,419. The quantity of butter manufac tured was 437,615 lb., which real ised ^22,100. The chairman-(Mr. S. Ellis) referred to the need for the introduction of Compulsory Grading of Cream Act. The balance sheet was .adopted. Messrs. T. J. Byrne and W. Bourke retired from the board of directors, and Messrs. W. J. Wood aud A. King were elected in their places. A copy of the revised articles of association was read, and it will be submitted to a special meeting for adoptiou.

DOOKIE A farewell concert and social was tendered Mr. Gardner on Friday night prior to bis departure for Mel bourne, Mr. Gardner is one of the oldest pioneers of the district, and has been a resident for over 40 years. Bird day was observed at the local State school on Friday Part of the afternoon was devoted to suitable songs, recitations and readings, and afterwards the scholars were taken into the bush, where 31 different species of birds were identified.

Obituary Another pioneer of the district, Mr Jas. Poyle, of Benalla West (formerly of Dookie) died on Sun day from dropBy- Mr Poyle was a native of Belfast and had reached the ripe age of 82 years. He came to this country 55 years ago. An aged widow and three sons and one'daughter 'bear his name, and. like the pioneer, are held in the highest esteem in their repectiye spheres. The funeral took place yesterday, the place of interment being the Benalla Cemetery. Rev.' Father O'Reilty officiated at the graveside and Mr T.
