WRESTLING IN JAPAN. [Newspaper Article] — Sunday Times — 29 June 1902

WRESTLING IN JAPAN.     Every large town in Japan has its   wrestling ring. The one in Tokio is a fair sample of most, a frame building, about 180ft. long by 150ft. wide, covered by a canvas roof. To be de- clared the victor of the " meet" a wrestler has not only to be prepared to wrestle successfully with every new comer up to a certain number every day, but be has also to keep the same pace going while the contests are in progress—a fortnight as a rule. It will be seen, therefore, that to become champion is no easy task. Once having attained this distinction, how- ever, he is privileged to assume the title of kinoshita kaizan, signifying ''invincible,'' and to wear the yoko-   zuna, a cloth belt woven like a rope and elaborately tied behind.

DRINKING THE DREGS SAD STORY OF THE SEAMY SIDE. DAUCHTER OF THE VANDERBILTS DIVORCED AND DESERTED. [Newspaper Article] — Sunday Times — 29 June 1902

DRINKING THE DREGS SAD STORY OF THE SEAMY SIDE. DAUGHTER OF THE VANDERBILTS DIVORCED AND DESERTED. Sad beyond description is the latest chapter in the strange life of Marie   Allen Wilmerding, known to all who have once seen her and who know the history of her famous family as "the most beautiful of all the Vanderbilts." Always a gay, unthinking life, it is gayer than ever now and pathetically devil-may-care. She is adrift in the Tenderloin. Once it was Delmonico's, now it's the Chinese restaurants. Once the teas, receptions, balls and theatre parties of the proudest fami- lies of New York. Now the midnight revels of those who scoff at family ties, the outcasts of Society. Once she had beauty, talent, family, fortune, a hus- band—everything to live for. Now, nothing—no money, no friends, no home, no hope. The few remaining members of her large family who have chosen not to forget her, are try- ing to have her recommitted to Bloom- ingdale Asylum, from which she was rele...
