LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. . - - ' MR. ROSE IN' REPLY. . . TO THE EPITOE. Sir,— In a recent issue of your journal yob criticise a synopsis of my addreBB which a local correspondent supplied to the Australian Star. On the merits of drawing conclusions from a brief outline of a speeoh, I have nothing to say, beyond pointing out that the significance of an address is contained more in the thread of continuous argument than in the summarised version presented to your readers. In the criticism referred to, your point is to overturn my deduction re foreign commerce by drawing attention to the surplus of Viotorian imports over exports. But why not go deeper into the matter, .and prove to your readers that tho nature of £he imports puts another colouring on the issue 7 Lot me take 1887, the year I think you call up as a witness to crush Protectionist logic. For that year Victoria was a great customer for luxuries, and other commodities not suitable for local produotion. - Her purchases of the f...
