JOHN EVANS. A sari death occurred at Wangaratta on Monday morning, when Mr John Evans, aged 19 years, son of Mr and Mrs D. E. Evans, of Boorhaman East, succumbed to an attack of appendicitis. The young man was employed in the London Bank in Wangaratta, and was highly respected by all who knew him, on account of his straightforward and upright character. He was operated on for appendicitis on Monday, but gradually sank and died. Much sympathy is felt for his parents and sister, who are well known residents of the district. He was a strong supporter of the Methodist church.

Imposing on the Parson. — One day during the week a man called at the residence of one of our local ministers. The man appeared iu a pitiable state* stating that his feet was sore, and that he had walked a long way and was hungry and tired. DEATH OP REY. FATHER SMITH. [Contributed] . Deep regret was felt throughout the North-Eastern District when it wasmada known that the Rev. Father Smith had (lied in the presbytery at a quarter-past 12 on Saturday, 7th inst. for the last twelve months the deceased priest had not been enjoying perfect health, and frequently experienced acute illness of short duration. The nature of his illneaa was not regarded aB serious, and a week previously Father Smith was in the beat form imaginable. On Thursday, 4th inst., he gave the first signs of illneaa, and on Friday it was thought neceaaary to have medical advice. Dr. Harkin was called in, and did not consider that there was any immediate danger. During the night Father Smith's condition grew worse, and on Saturday the doctor told Father Lawless that if Father Smith did not soon respond to the treatment he feared that the outlook would be serious. POISONED CAKE EATEN In returning a verdict of "Acciden tal death," after the inquiry at "West Ham on Saturday, into the death of Albert Chaliingsworth, 18 months, who ate a piece of poisoned cake intended for rats, the jury (says "Lloyd's "Weekly News" of January IS), sug gested that the sanitary authority .should be informed of the occurrence. They warned the ratcatcher to be more careful how he left his cakes about in future. The baby's parents live in Cleaner road, Custom House, and the mother said that when she took the house about sis months ago the place was infested with rats. She complained to the landlord, who sent a ratcatcher to the premises, and for a day or so everything was quiet. Then she saw a big rat run down the curtain when she came down in the morning. She again complained to the landlord, who sent some men to open the drains. After this the rats "all came in the kitchen," and on January 7 the rat catcher called again. SCHOOL CHILDREN'S HEALTH MEDICAL, OFFICER'S REPORT The annual report, for 1912. of the 'Chief Medical Officer of the Board of Education, contains (says "Public Opinion"), an exhaustive account of the measures which are being taken throughout tho country to safeguard the health of school children. Alto gether there are 1111 medical officers in the school service in England and Wales, as compared with 9-13 in 1911; S2 are women and there are 742 nurses also engaged. The Chief Medical Officer, Sir George Newman, states that it is un fortunately true that uncleanliness still occupies a large share of the time, thought, and energy of the offi cers of the school medical service, though it is encouraging to note that throughout the country the returns show a decided and progressive im urovement, and that the grosser forms of uncleanliness are now rare as com pared with the conditions that pre vailed when medicat inspection was Instituted In 1908.
