CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the oplrlious of our correspoidents. TO TIE EDITOR OF THE OIPPSLAND TtIES. SIR,-Bush fires that hare done much damage are thought by some people to be the work of maliciously disposed persons, because the injured parties cannot other wise account for the origin of the fires, commencing in out-of-the-way places where no one had camped. It may be of some use to mention to you that I recol lect a stockman having told me a few tears ago that, as he was riding home one tot day, he lighted his pipe, and then carelessly threw dtluw the match, without having first extinguished it. IHe then rode on at an easy pace for a short distance, enjoying his ,ipe, before he became aware that he had set .he bush on fire. le then galloped to the station and gave imme diate notice of the fire, but it was never suslected by any one that he had by his ownl ctarelessness burtt tihe rn. SA. settler has, sinlce then, informed me that-he onre day lighted...

'lalters no greater satire on the vitiated literary tastes of a largo section of the British nation could be drawn by the most powerful writers who are i?inical to our country, than we may find in the description of the last acts of criminals who ere destined to expinte t their offences on the scaffold. The t Nlelbourne daily.and weekly journals treat their readers to tlheso descriptions with a minuteness which must disgust any mind of even the lowest grade of refinement. In last week's papers we have chronicled how the man Pellet, -the very utterance of whose name I brings with it a feeling of abhorrence c and disgust, to which the blood-stained e annals of a Marat or a Robespiero give forth no parallel,-walked from his r cell, how his countenance was com- t posed, how his shirt collar was un buttoned to give room to fasten the fatal noose, how he fell a distance of t six feet, and oh! horror! liow he died fresh from his iniquity, and repented at I the last moment, when the narrow ...

AMATEUR CONCERT AND SOIREE IN AID OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND AT PORT ALBERT. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 16 January 1863

AMATEUR 'CONCERT AND SOIREE ,IN AID OF THE pre CIH-URCH OF ENGLAND AT plt PORT ALBERT. pia It would appear that the example which the ak members of our Mechanica' Instituteo so meri- P" toriously advanced was not lost on our Southern "i'4 neighbors, and that they were not above adopt. the ing the course which was initiated by our bei musical amateurs for the purpose of assisting "' to clear a public building from debt. Much as P the fair sfex, however, had asaisto.l at the Mechanics' soiree, and, valuable as were their services in the tea and toast department, we find them far out-stripped in their endeavours spa by the Itlle. of Port Albert and ito neighbor- on hood, who not only assisted in dispensing So refreshments, but also aided in the music.1 of performances, thus giving an eclat to the con. we cert, which took place on last night week in pr the large room at the Emigration Depot, Port Albert, that could never have been obtained by bit any musical performance, amateur or othe...
