Breeding for Egg Production. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 28 March 1913

Breeding for Egg Prod uction. Cau the egg yield bo increased by breeding from the best producers, or is one just as likely to get as many eggs frdm any strain, family or breed, provided the birds are strong and vigorous, and hatched at the proper season of the year ? To this question an expert of an experiment farm addressed himself recently, admitting in the next para graph, however, that some families do appear to lay much more ieadily I than others, though a few families require more caretul attention and feeding to get a reasonable egg pro duction. ( onstitutiofl is more than, record. Good, strong, vigorous birds are es sential to egg pro uction. The sim ple fact that a hen has laid 200 or more eggs in the pullet year is not sufficient to wairrant her being used as a~ breeder, for this expeit has seen a number of 200-egg hens with long narrow heads and sunken eyes, and moreover has tested them, but has yet to find one showing these signs of low vital ity _th/at.w:as__woith_whilo...
