Never Deny Your Religion. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 February 1898

Never Deny Your Religion. ' And Abraham planted a grove in Beer sheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the God Eternal.' — Genesis xxi, 33. One of the meanest traits in man is cowardice, and very few people will play the part of a nnward when it concerns their business interests. They will boldly stand up for their rights, and bravely hold on to what they are entitled ; but In the matter of religion which is endured and borne with cowardly silence. It may be defamed and derided, and there will be none to resent, or in any way confront the traducer or reviler. How many are ashamed to freely acknowledge that they are Jews, and they are but too happy when they are told they don't look like Jews at all I To such the demeanor of Abraham should serve as a vivid example. He lived surrounded by idolatrous heathen, who worshipped the most frivolous gods of human make, men who were devoid of reason and the conception of a cultured people. Yet he dared to proclaim his monotheistic...

Preparations are in full swing for celebrating -Purim. Tickets are being bought on all sides for the Purim Ball that will be held in aid of the funds of the Congregation, and it is hoped that this will prove as great a success as did the previous balls organised by the Committee. It has also been decided to make Purim a pleasant festival to the children attending the Hebrew School, who after the service on Purim morning, will be treated to a whole day's outing. The children will owe their treat chiefly to the generosity of Mr. Solomon Her man, who has kindly undertaken to defray almost the entire expenses, including the A chartering of the steamer, as it is intended to take the children on a river excursion. Another interesting function will be held on Purim, for which the members of the Congre gation have been invited. Presentations will be made to two Past offi cer s of the Congregation . Plagiarism, or Thefts of Good Labels. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Plagiarism, or Thefts of Good Labels. One of the most serious evils of our time undoubtedly is the frauds perpetrated on the people with regard to foods and quack productions. In the matter of quack medicines the frauds are perpetrated by barefaced lies and purchased testimonials, and in this way people pay 2s 6d, Is 6d and 2s 9d for articles which they could purchase at the chemists for 6d, but, then, of course, they, the buyers, would know what they are taking, and when the mystery, by which the quack surrounds ?f cure all ' is removed, so is the value. Of course some people get well after using these quack medicines, but so they would had they never taken them. Suppose 1,000 persons used one of those '' cure alls' and 100 find a benefit, and the other 900 find this particular nostrum absolutely valueless. In this case we never hear a word from the 900, but we have plenty of over drawn testimonials from the 100, most of whom we say would be cured by time. The wording of these test...

Ancient and Modern Phases of Zionism. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 25 February 1898

Ancient and Modern Phases of Zionism. The first Zionist Congress ever held took place over 2000 years ago in a hiding place among the mountains o£ Ephraim, and the leaders of the movement were Mattathias and his brave sons, the Maccabeans. At that time the influence of Hellenism was entering into every social circumstance of the life of the Jews, and was threatening to sweep away every: trace of Judaism, both politically and morally. The education of the Jewish youth was directed towards the acquisition of Greek tastes in art, philosophy, and pleasure. The patriotic party among the Jews resisted this assimilation by the cultivation of the Law and the Tradition ; but when Antiochus instituted a barbarous persecution to compel an imme diate and uncomprising conversion to G-reek idolatory, they determined to resist the mighy forces working havoc in the nati »n by an appeal to arms. That was the only indication, consistent with the age. That was the scheme adopted by the leaders of the ...
