Correspondence. iWe do not hold ourselron responsible for the opinions expressed by our corre.pondonta]. FOOTBALL. TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE ST ANDARD. Sir,-According to the secretary of the Thornton club, his side has with drawn from the competition owing to the lack of knowledge of the game on the part of It. Payno; and the fear of a repetition of the same to-morrow. I think Payne now that he has heard a little about his remissniess will bo "just the thing," and a tfrr.t class game will sure to eventuate. As to any disturbance that may take place on or off the ground, the police will have a say in this. I do not think there is any need for alarm. Whyall this yap yapping? YARCK V. JOHNSON'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 June 1909

YARCK V. JOIIr SON'S CREEK. This match as contested on Saturday last, when the Creek journeyed to Yarck, and after a friendly and very exciting game;-the visitors were victorious by five points. The slippery state of the ground made good and open football out of the question, consequently, kicking the greasy sphere along the ground was the oeder of tho day. The home team opened with great dash and soon had a leoad of seven points, but towards the end of thie quarter the visitors were equal to the occasion in adding one goal (Ifanning) one behind, thus nmaking the scores level at the end of the term. Yarek's goal was booted by " Father" Payne from a snap shot. During the second quarter, good solid work was put in by both rocks, lth ball frequently travelling up and 1:wun the field with great speed. YT;'v l managed to add two behind to their scote to the Creek's one before the bell rang, thus showing that the .teams were evenly matched. The board at half-time showed--Yarek 1-3, Creek ...

THORNTON V ALEXANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 June 1909

THORNTON V ALEXANDRA. It was impossible to " play the gamer" on Saturday, rain, slush nd-mnud, being the order of the day. A most miserable time was experienced by those engaged in the play, but they acquitted themselves very creditably indeed. The game was far 'from being rough and there was an absence of bad and threatening language. Mensforth managed the teamns n first class style and was quick to'notice in. fringemenis. There was a fair igathering of spectators and much amusement was afforded owing to the slippery nature of the ground. First-class play was out of the question, but at times both teams put in some astonishing work. It was next to impossible to mark the ball, con sequently around work was indulged in after the first quarter. The first quarter of the play was all in favor of Alexandra, they having started off at high pressure, and it was remark able the persistent attllacks that were :nado with but poor results, the Thornton backs wnaking a dctermined resistence. Alexandra District Football Association. DELEGATE MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 25 June 1909

Alexandra District Football ; Association. DELEGATE MEETING: At a special meeting of the above, held on Wednesday eyoning, presided over by the president, Mr. E; N: Samnp son, several permits wore granted. The application of the Thornton club to play Duncan, a traveller, who played under protest for Alexandra last season, was refused. At a provious meeting a motion "'thlat Duncan is eligible to play in all matches," was de feated by five 'otes to three. It was considered inadvisable, on Wednesday, to interfere with this decision'. The same club protested R. Payne, as an umpire, owing to "inclliciency." The extraordinary manner in which 'Payne marinaged the Thornton and Johnson'si Creok match called forth considerable adverse comment, in-- one particular, ' viz., Iallowing: persistent rough play. 'While a majority of dele gates supported the Thornton club'in their contention that .unnecessary roughness was permitted, yet it was considered unwise to. deal too harshly. with Payne. A mo...
