Cricket Crumbs. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 24 September 1895

Cricket Crumbs. A cricket match was played on Wednes day between the Cosmopolitans and a team styling themselves ' The Idiots,' and was won by tbe latter. Jack Holt was the highest scorer, 40, for the Cosmos, and his brother, Bob, retired Jerry Coomber is bock amongst us again, and, judging by his play on Saturday, h» will prove a thorn for the Narandera trund lers. He went in. second and carried out his bat, compiling 37 runs. Tommy Jonas played nice cricket, and seems more at home when opposed to Wren's bowling than he did hut year. Duffy, a blob, reads -well for the com mencement ot the season. You. will hava to do bettor than this Tom, when ths Meat Works trophy is being discussed. Wioking and Bob Holt batted fairly well, and the latter had bad luok in being run out. Billy Stewart was not at bis best in the field on Saturday. Perhaps tbe oold wind blowing accounts for it. Wren, who is one of the best— if not ths best — all-round orickettsr in N&randera, was the most succ...

Several acqnatic enthusiasts, ino'ud ing Meters Uohen, Quirk, MoBley, Higrfos, Miller, Quist, Phillips, spake warmly in support of establishing a rowing club here. It was decided that the initiation . and subscription be £1, which is considered very reasonable. Mention was made that it was likely several persons in the country would join tbe club. FOREST THINNING. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 24 September 1895

FOREST THINNING. The forest thinning operations which are proceeding in the neighborhood of Narandera cannot be said to be sur rounded by the most satisfactory con dition!. The first objection taken to the scheme was in Parliament, where it was contended that the work was hardly a proper one to pay for with loan money, even though there was provision for the repayment of the amount of ontlay by annaal payments extending over thirty years. The work certainly does seem one that the English money lender who is asked to subscribe to our loans might look shyly at, and we may be per__ /fectly certain that if the notorious' Mr Wilson, of the ' Investor's Re view' happen to light on the item in the schodnie of the Loa,'- Bill, he will make as much out of it to the detriment of the colony as it ii possibly to do. There should be no disguising the -fact from ourselves that the primary purpose of the work in question is to find work for the unemployed labor that exists in onr midst, and that i...

THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. ' Children's Ball.
