Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY "EXCELSIOR." SATURDAY, 5TH OCTOBER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 5 October 1878

ºlgxnudita L eu hIanrdart PUBLISIED EVERY SATURDAY " EXOEL*IO Ist." SATURDAY, 5TiH OCTOBER. TtIe proceedings which took place at the late public meeting of the commit tee and subscribers of the Alexandra Cottage Hospital must eventuate in good, as it has for some time past been a topic of conversation and complaint that the management in some particu lars was faulty, and this view to a certain extent, we must confess, was borne out by tho' statements made by the several speakers at the meeting in question; and we will deal with the several matters that in our opinion require immediate attention. In the first place we would remark that any public institution depending on the voluntary subscriptions of the public for its existence will always receive support in proportion to the confidence the public have in the management thereof. We consider the committee, com posed as it is for the most part of practical business men, are quite competent to deal with the question of retaining, the ...

MAY AND SEPTEMBER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 5 October 1878

MAY AND SEPTEMBER. -4---~ In a well-furnished apartment in one of the houses in the large town of Bloomingdale, there sat, on the morning I speak of, three persons. One was a man, whose smooth brow and unfaded looks told nothing of ago, but whose limbs were completely paralyzed. The second was a lady who might once have possessed great beauty, but on whom consumption was making hasty and unmistakable ravages. The third was a girl of eighteen or nineteen, whose likeness to each, as well as her evident devotion to their wants, pro claimed her their daughter. Kate Asheroft was not beautifvl, in the common acceptance of the word. She had fine expressive eyes and a charming mouth ; but even those did not entitle her to be called a beauty. The highest charm of her countenance was a lovely expression, speaking of inward peace and gentle thoughts. Mr Ashoroft had long been a miserable invalid. When still in the prime of life, paralysis had done its work upon his frame ; bringing all the app...

LIFE, FIRE, AND MARINE ASSURANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 October 1878

LIFE, FIRE. AND MARINE ASSURANCE. In. life, fire, and marine nssuoranoe, as. in banking, there Is an apoplexy which, though it proceeds rather from atrophy than plethora, is very fatal, and instantaneous mo its effects. This is stopping payment. To understand the business of insurance, or of balinking, involves a certrain amount of mnathtematical knowledge. Alaehraical eqoa tlors are necessary to give sums atit eimpli and compound interest and simile and com pound diocourt ; to show the relativo proflits of discounting long ant short bilii, and what may be made under all the emlplicated con ditions of giving and taking, in which so much of monetary science consists. Life and fire risks the same. Aithough in practice, tables serve for supplying nmuch of this in formation, according to the doctrine that every enoin or should know romething about the construction of his machine, the actuary, the aenshirer, thi ledger-keeper, the company, and thie dirt uore, oughit to have their minds e...

SIn,-I am reluctantly compelled through your columns to call the attention uf the local police to the Inquent raids made by the Irrikins 'on property in the township. At my place plants and flowers are most ruthlessly destroyed in my absence, by those nuisances, and with no other object than that of pure miolhiof. I also find that they have developed a tasto for eggs, to my cost, which if indulged in any further may lead to serious cons quencep, as I shall bo compelled to make an example of any of those pests of soci, ty that I may catch stealing or destroying my property. Apologising for troubling you, I am, &c., DAVID PILUMIIMII. Alexandrn, 8th October.

WHAT IS POETRY? [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 October 1878

WHAT IS POETRY? Tell me, poet, whence it came, This divine inspiring gift, Spirit of etheral feame, That the mind of man can lift From its prison-house of naught Unto glorious realms of thought ? Ti' me, is it from the ocean, When some mighty unsren hand Driven it forth with hoisterous motion On the reeks and o'er the sand, Then, ano-, in rippling woase G ntly moves the shells it tves ? Is it. from the blunt rin"r wind, When with monmenel roar, Mladdened like, it seeks to find Itest in cavwrns on the shore, Or whon it, in ruild. r mood, Murmurs through the leafy wood ? Is it borne upon the storm, When night's darkness with the day Mingles, and the lightning's form Through the clouds is seen to play, And the thunders pealing mound Strikes the heart with awe profound P Is its habitation nigh To the peaceful, sheltered grove, Where young lovers plead and sigh, As on moonlit ere they rove, And with plighted troth, in bliss Eoal the contract with a kiss P Tell me, is it to be bought, Lik...

CAUSE AND EFFECT. (To the Editor of the Standard.) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 October 1878

CAUSE AND EFFECT. (70 the Editor of the Standard.) Sxn,-If you were to ride up U.T. Creek about four miles, or along the north side of the River Goulburn some six or seven miles, you would see a belt of country about a quarter of a mile wide strewn with fallen trees and the branches thereof, ind.cating the track of a tornado which swept over the hillu a few years ago. The tornado is often very destructive to property, and sometimes to human life, but for a never failling source of baneful influence to humanity I commend you to the lee side of neglected privies, such as we have in abundance in Alexandra, when a gentle breeze is wafting to your nose-not the balmy effulgence of nature's unfolding stores, now so rich and delightful-but the exhalations of abomination. I had occasion to go along Bayley street a few evenings ago, and when about sixty yards south from Downney street, I noticed a oroup of children playing joyously in the thoroughfare. I stoold for a few moments to watch thei...

MAY AND SEPTEMBER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 12 October 1878

----M'Y-AND SEPTEMBER. .. No foolish pride in Kate's heart heold her back from the search after the means of living. Tokching-that resource of almost every gi l left to her self-was not included in her catalogue of labour. Kate was intelligent and well-tauht; but of the regular routine of school learning she was ignorant. Of useful information she had a fund. It was im parted to her from childhood, by her father and mother; but neither of her parents were willing to spare her from her home, and therefore her school knowledge was not extensive. She had learned book-keeping, how ever, of her father, who was once a successful merchant before the hand of disease had touched alike his person aind ,:...his .fortunes. And .her first thought was, that she might obtain some situation in which she could make this knowledge count to her for bread. S ?he entered several shops, modestly offering her services as a book-keeper or cashier; but all those situations were Yalready filled. Next the mil...
