DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our Correspondents.) BARMAH TOWNSHIP. A meeting of local tennis players was held here on Thurs -ay, July 16 It was "decided to form a club to compete in western division of Na thalia Association. The office bearers were agreed to. President, Mr. C. Maloney; secretary and delegate, Mr Hill; match committee, Messrs Scott, Treacy, Clarke, president and secre tary. A local mixed doubles tourna ment is also to be held. Our local footballers were defeated at Picoia on Saturday week altera strenuous game. Three of our pro minent "bailers" were absent, but that is all in the game. Places for minor premiership are getting very interesting, which is as it should be. I worl't mention the weather and the grass, or the crops, which are unfortu nately not in the same flourishing condition as our sports, but we will hope, for better thingsiand remember that is the mark of a brave man not to show distress in adversity.

The Senate Election. MR. i\I AUGER AT NATHALIA: Mr. S. Mauger, one of the six selected liberal candidates iidd'e-^cd the electors at the Public H 11 on Tuesday evening last. There was a good attendance. Cr. J. H. Tuckett, president of the local branch of the People's Party presided, and intro duced the speaker in a short and pithy speech. He thought that tht liberal party had done mire for labor than so called labor po'iticiins Liberalism tried to build men up, while labor politics was in the direction of pulling the top man down. He had much pleasure in introducing ■ to t h meeting Mr. Mauger. Mr. S. Mauger said he had found during the three weeks of the cam paign that there was a great deal of interest taken iu the election, and that was in contrast to the ex perience of the last campaign. Obituary. Mr. JAMES KEYES. We regret to have to announce the death of an old colonist and civil servant in the Lite Mr James Keyes, who died at Ihe residence of his son-in law, Senior Constable Brown, on Saturday last, at the mature age of. 77 years. The Ute Mr. Keyes arrived in the State in the year 1852 when he followed the occupation of a miner, and worked on the princi pal goldfields, and was present at the Eureka ' Stockade. Becoming tired of mining he joined the rail way service and continued in the de partment till he was entitled to his retiring allowance. He leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters'—of whom Mrs. Brown is one of the latter—to mourn his loss. The-remains were taken to Ballarat for interment.
