Notes —The midget of tlie whole tree 1 aniily is the Greenland birch . It Is a perfect tree in every sense of that term and lives its allotted number of years from seventyfive to 130 just as other species of the great birch family do , although Its height , under the most favorable conditions , seldom exceeds ten inches . Whole bluffs of the east and southeast coast of Greenland are covered with thickets of this diminutive species of woody plant , arid in many places , where the soil Is uncommonly poor and frozen from eight to ten months a year , a forest of these trees will flourish for half a century without growing to a height exceeding four inches . —St . THE NEW WOMAN . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 February 1896
THE NEW WOMAN . Ideals Regarding WomenHave Changed . THE . ATHLETIC WOMAN REIGNS . WHICH MA . KEF THE BEST WIFE , THE BICYCLE GIRL , OR THE DELICRTE CLIHGING VINE ? Not so very long ago the Ideal woman was the helpless , strengtuless creature , who must be protected from the faintest breath of air , and from the slightest exertion . She was beautifully and confidingly dependent upon the manly oak to which she clang . She passed from an utter dependence upon her father and brothers to an equally utter dependence upon a husband . She had little self-reliance , and still less ability to take care of herself . And now , of late years , there has been a change—and we hear of a New Woman . That there actually ls a New Woman , there can be no doubt . Her manner of clothing herself has really very little to do with the case . Her newness consists rather ln a new mind and a new body than in new clothes . She Is distinctly able to take care of herself . A great many of them make their own liv...

COLONY ITEMS . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 February 1896
COLONY ITEMS . An enterprise which our Green Core Springs colonists are taking hold of with great energy , and which promises large profits , ls that of tobacco culture and cigar manufacturing . The fine Havana wrappers , such as are produced ln Cuba and which have made the Cuba cigars so popular , can be produced of equal quality in Florida . As the war In Cuba has cut off all supplies from that Island , It has given an Impetus to the production of tobacco in this country , and as a consequence prices are higher and large profits can be made in this line of production . An excellent object lesson may be seen in certain sections of North Carolina . In recent years farmers have abandoned cotton and are taking to tobacco culture . Rocky Point , for example : A few years ago the farms in this vicinity were all run down and burled under mortgages . Land that was not good for cotton , ln former years , could be bought for fifty cents an acre . The town of Kooky Point had a population of ...
