THE "REFORMATION . " [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

THE REFORMATION . Wc are soon to be the children of new parents . Theold City Fathers , having grown grey in the service . have signified their willingness , to abdicate in favor of their successors , and the successors referred to , are perfectly content to bear the brunt of battle for the good of the dear people . Much has been said and written of the bad manner in which the affairs of the cityhave been conducted during past years , and great dissatisfaction expressed because those in authority were getting a little more easy in money matters , than they were on first assuming the reins of govcrment . We never took part in decrying persons for looking out for No . 1 ., We hold to it that selfpreservation is tlie first law of nature , and as money or its equivalent is the most essential commodity in attaining that end , we surely can attach no blame to the present Fathers of the city for preserving themselves against those misfortunes to which all men are liablo . The Press has tak...

. The Minstrel War . t [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

. The Minstrel War . t As the dispute between the differen companies of delineators of negro char acteristics forms the most prominent to pic of conversation at the present time and as our citizens , as well as strangeri seem to be interested in ihe matter , w < may not be censured , perhaps , for indulging in a few remarks , more especiallj as our brethern of the press , generally have given their opinions at large upon the subject in dispute . Gratitude is one of the nobkst traits with which man has been endowed by his Creator , and to exercise that trait when the occasion offers , in a free and liberal spirit , is a redeeming quality , no matter how objectionable the general characteristics of the individual may be . We have read the different statements put forth ty Mr . E . P . Christy , and by George Harrington , and we arc inclined to the opinion that the latter has not acted in a straight-forward manner , neither has he manifested any degree of gratitude , so far ...

The Ten Mile Race [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

The Ten Mile Race 1 OOTSIDE SHOWS . I The Reporters of the Tribute and Times had their sense of morality greatly shocked on Friday last , on witnessing the outside shows at the Union Race Course , Long Island . They were also greatly disgusted on finding themselves in the company of the Fancy , in their public , conveyance engaged to take them to the ground . The said Reporters being of the moral school , of course attracted the attention of the boys , and we suppose afforded much merriment to them . When once they get used to the boys * they will find them a fust rate set of fellers , willing to go through thick and thin to serve them . The remarks of tho papers f i spoken of were so much alike in regard to sweat cloths turning up the ace , and other amusing and innocent games , that wo do really believe both Reporters must have been taken in and done for a small-amount , say a 10 spot each . Had they mentioned the fact that they belonged to the press gang , the • boys would have p...

Cruelty to Horseflesh . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

Cruelty to Horseflesh . In another part of our paper will be found the full particulars of a match against time , iu which a fine bit of horseflesh was compelled to go one hundred miles inside of nine hoars . We cannot say much for the humanity of a man who would thus cruelly use a noble animal . But the almighty dollar will often induce men to overstep the bounds of reason , and do those things , which , in their sober second thoughts , they would wish they had left undone . Thc noble beast that performed the truly great feat above referred to , has proved to be at the head of the heap , but we hope this will be the last time any horse may be compelled to undertake a similar performance . Cruelty to animals should be severely punished , especially in a city whose laws prohibit the | exercise of the manly art of self-defence . I

The Police . The Mayor's veto set aside . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

The Police . The Mayors veto set aside . W e are pleased to learn that the bill increasing the pay of policemen , which was passed by the Aldermen a short lime since , aud subsequentl y vetoed by the Mayor , was re-passed on Monday evening by the decisive vote of 16 to 3 , thus rendering the Mayor s veto of no avail . This is as it should be . Men who are considered on duty at all times should receive pay at least equal to the wages earned by a great majority of our mechanics . If the Mayor can live on $ 600 per year , why let him place the balauce of his salary to the credit of the city aud its tax payers . Its a poor rule that wont work both ways ,

A Household Word . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 19 November 1853

A Household Word . The name of Hiram Anderson , of the celebrated Carpet Warehouse , No . 99 Bowery , is as familiar to citizens and strangers as a household word . What has caused this great popularity 1 A truly business tact possessed by Mr . Anderson , and the secret of selling his goods at the smallest possible profit , thereby enabling purchasers to procure a good article at less cost than they have formerly been accustomed to pay for an inferior carpet . Before the proprietor of 99 entered the field of competition , our carpet merchants charged such exorbitant prices as to place it out of thc power of the poorer clashes to enjoy the comforts of a good carpet , but now lhe ease is altered , rich and poor have the same facilities afforded them , and all owing to the mode of doing business adopted by Hiram Anderson , of 99 Bowery .

Wager of $ 4000 won by a Gelding . GREAT ONE-HUNDRED MILE TROT . One Hundred miles in less than nine hours . Twelve months ago , during a conversation between several sporting gentlemen , a match was made of $ 3000 to $ 1000 , that no horse in the Northern part of the United States , could be produced within one year , that oould trot one hundred - miles in nins hours . The match was made , and the wager of $ 4 , 000 , being placed in the hands of a responsible party , the owner of a powerful full blooded gelding at once commenced training his horse for the great feat , and during the Fall amusements on the Turf , at tho Long Island tracks , this great match against time , has long been the theme of conversation among those who take an interest in the speed and bottom of full blooded horses . The opinion was general , that the horse in question , named by the owner , could not perform the feat within the time recorded in the papers . The day upon which all who had any knowledge of t...
