Boot Crops for Swine . The spring ; is the time to discuss the importance of growing roots for the hogs , as the fall usually finds the fanner too late in the season to make amends for any negligence during the spring . The best and most profitable root crop for the hogs is the sugar beet . It should be put in the ground early , so as to get a good start , and when the crop is ready for harvesting it should be stored in a manner so that the roots can be fed every day . The old plan of storing them in mounds only to have them sealed up , and out of use , is passing away . AU the root crops can be stored in bins in the barn , with layers of dry dirt or sand between the roots , and they will not only keep well , but be within easy access of the farmer at all times . The sugar beet is very rich in sugar , and will consequently not only act as a dietary portion of the food , but also fatten the animal and create heat for the body . They may be cooked or fed raw , and it is best to feed t...

The editor does not allow anything for grain , and attributes the large profit to the pasture alone . Two and a half gallons is above ; the average yield , while 8 cents ner gallon is nea...

The Cost of Raising Chicks . Ten chicks just from the shell will weigh lees than three-quarters of a pound for the whole , but they will double in weight every ten days until they are forty days old . They should not cost over ten cents each for food before they are ten weeks old . At ten weeks of age their weight will vary from one and a half pounds each to two pounds . If enough food be allowed so as to make the cost twelve cents for the ten weeks , the chances are that two pounds weight , may be attained in that time . Now , we know that those who breed the scrubs will rebel at the claim that a chick should weight two pounds when ten weeks , old , but in the crossing of a Plymouth Rock on a Brahma hen we secured chicks that weighed two pounds when they were nine weeks old . They were fed heavily , however , the cost being no object , as we experimented to see how quickly they would reach two pounds each , but we do not think we exceeded seven cents per pound . APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 13 March 1886

APIARY The Loss of Bees . But for the wonderful fertility of the queen it would require but a short time in order to depopulate a hive . Every bee that starts out on a journey runs the gauntlet . It may be seized by a bird while on the wing , or may drop into the clutches of some treacherous spider the moment it reaches a flower . It may enter a deep flower , become entangled and perish . It may be overtaken in a heavy rainstorm , seek insecure shelter and be drowned . It may forage to a great distance and a cold wind render it unable to return . To give some idea of the daily losses of a hive it may be stated that the queen is capable of laying 2 , 000 eggs in a day , yet with this large daily addition to the hive the colony will sometimes become weak in numbers and be unable to protect its -hive . There are enemies in the fields and around the hives . Disease will sometimes break out among them and sweep off every member of the colony . Despite all the precautions taken by the bee...

Letters are coming in from all parts of the country from subscribers who have organized or are organizing Clubs . Dakota takes the lead , the first two clubs organized coming from there . All unite in saying that it is one of the best plans ever devised for savins money for farmers , and at the same time combining other general advantages of organization . Are you , dear reader , helping on the good work ? If not , why not do so now ? Call together a few of your neighbors and lay the matter before them and organize a Club .
