£ Mej $ mitt £ ftMt $ THE JUDGED CITABLE . . It was late at night , between eleven and twelve , when the circuit Judge stepped from the hackney coach which had conveyed him from the City Hall and mounted the steps of his dwelling . Though muffled In fur and encased in a thickly quilted wrapper , he shuddered with the cold while striving to fit bis key in the night-latch ; for the sidewalks were white with , snow and hail , which the sharp winds whirled into the air again , and left in piles and ridges around the door-steps and area-railings . ... With a sigh of relief , the Judge threw his wrappers into a corner , pulled off his damp ; boots , and drawing forth a well-worn dress-ing-gown and a pair of faded slippers from a closet behind tho door , prepared to make himself warm and comfortable , after a day of unusual anxiety and fatigue . •;• ^ . AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 4 July 1868

AGRICULTURAL ¦ election * *> d Coad « awtloai . Cutting Grass Early . It is one of the encouraging signs of these latter days , that farmers are beginning to see that It is better to cut their grass ear .: lier . than formerly ; that hay . made from early cut grass ls relished by all kinds of stock much better thanthatjmade . from late cut , and that stock : like It w ? U enough to eat such , a quantity as will keefc them- ln the most thriving order . . My attention , was . first especially called to this subject by a letter received in answer to one I addressed to Amasa Scott of Craftsbury . Vt ., three years ago . I had heard of-a cow of his which had produced 604 lbs . of > butter in : ten consecutive months , and desired to know about her , and particularly al to the kinds and amount of thc food she consigned ., , In his reply , which clearly Indicated tiie progressive character of _ the writer , he stated that her feed was the same as that given to all his...

HORTICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 4 July 1868

HORTICULTURAL ¦ Notes and Suggestions for July . ¦; ,- THE OBCHABD—INJUBIOUB INSECTS , r The cold rairis of May and the beginning of June which retarded operations In the field , orchard arid garden , bad at , least one good effect—they , have killed millions of tent caterpillars and otber injurious Insects , but a clean sweep has riot been made ofthe pests of the orchard , for the curculio still survives and is more troublesome than ever . It is to be hoped that the apple-worms have received a quietus from the cold , ungenial weather , for the codling-moth have been few and far between this season . FBEVEKTIOK IB BETTER THAN CUBE . We must not depend too much on the weather to rid us of these destructive insects . Tbe campaign against them should be carried on unceasingly . The trunks of the trees should be washed with soap-suds , strong lye , or a solution of soda , to destroy the eggs , larva or pnpse . Bough bark should be scraped ofi , for it furnishes a lurking place for apple...

§ mt # tk Economy [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 4 July 1868

§ mt # tk Economy Edited by a Praattoal Houi • keeper ^ The Horrid Boaches . What shall I do with the roaches f They drive me nearly crazy . They are in my bedrooms , in my closets , in my pantry , in my cupboard—in short , they re everywhere . I ve tried every remedy , ! ever . read or heard of—every sweet and every bitter—every nauseous drug and deadly poison . I sprinkled powdered cayenne pepper over their thoroughfares , and they actually liked it . Then I regaled them with Scotch snuff , chuckling to myself as I tossed it into every crevice ; and seating myself to watch the result . One came out , peered around cautiously , and seeing no enemy , advanced boldly , put one tiny paw Into the pungent powder , and applied it to his nose . And—will you believe it ?—he sat up , crossed bis paws , and sneezed , —yes , actually sneezed 1 Well , thought I , IHl see if I cant find something that is not to be sneezed at , and so treated them to a dish of fly poison , feeling sure I had at ...
