1 The Anti-Gossip League [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

1 The Anti-Gossip League 5 By Effie W . Merriman S s B 2 IN TWO TARTS-FART 1 i * a ig R ICHFIELD was like most small Eastern villages in its tendency to meddle with the affairs of its neighbors ; also in its possession of one or two persons who were considered greater gossips than all the others . Bob Eastman was first to speak of the confidential talks indulged in by Mrs . Price and her nearest neighbor , the widow Belden , as The Price-Belden Gossip manufactory . He was home from college on his first vacation , and had become wrathy over what he considered the too free discussion which a certain escapade of his had occasioned . The name had become popular , at once , and when Bob returned as a college graduate three years later he was amazed upon hearing a reference to the Price-Belden Gossip manufactory . It came from the pretty lips of Clara Wells , with whom he had quarreled and played since she was a baby . The way that name has lived , he said to Clara , proves that there is ...

UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

One of the handsomest of the smaller buildings on the grounds of the Trans-Miss-issippi Exposition at Omaha is the structure erected by Montgomery Ward & Co ., of Chicago . It occupies a prominent place upon the Bluff tract , among the state buildings , and is a model of architectural art . It is most fitting that this great commercial house , whose growth has been contemporaneous with the development of the West , and which is favorably known to every farmer In this country , should thus join in celebrating the advance made by the trans-Mississippi states . One western manufacturer remarked recently that Montgomery Ward & Co . had taught this country that there exists absolute commercial honesty—there isnt a man from Maine to California who longer hesitates to send his money for goods to a reliable house because the great mail-order establishment always treated every customer , no matter at what distance , just as if he were making his purchases in person . ...

Miscellaneous [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

Miscellaneous Look After the Littles Samuel Mitten , in a talk to Illinois farmers the other day , said : It is surprising how well posted farmers of certain localities become when there is big money or profits in sight . At a good grain center in Indiana a few days ago I found farmers discussing the question of clubbing together and shipping to Chicago their reserve of old wheat . One farmer , r more active than the others , had discovered an opportunity for cleaning up their bins and at the same time cleaning up some big profits . He had cut this item from a Chicago paper : . The cleaners are making it rather interesting for Mr . Leiter in the wheatcar lot crowd , forcing him to bid liberally in order to keep anything that can be worked over into contract out of their hands . One elevator firm making a specialty of cleaning grain , and which has gotten very wealthy at the business , is said to have cleaned up $ 100 , 000 within a month . The leader explained that they could : ship...

SCARED TO LIFE [Newspaper Article] — Farmers Voice — 4 June 1898

SCARED TO LIFE Mrs . Fannie Smith , of Terre Haute , had been for more than ten years confined to her bed , absolutely unable to move hand or foot . Her case was utterly hopeless , according to physicians . She was alone one day , when suddenly the cry of fire was raised . The fire proved to be in an adjoining house , and attracted , for the time teing , the attention of the family , so that they did not think of the sick woman upstairs . As the cries grew louder with the increasing crowd and the engines rumbled along the streets , and the woman realized that the fire was close at hand , her agony became almost unendurable . Suddenly , as the noises swelled into a great cry , and as she thought she heard the hissing of the flames she leaped , with a bound from the bed and ran down stairs . She had been shocked into life . This is not a solitary case . The story of this event in the newspapers called put from various sources accounts of similar events in which cure had been wrought b...
