A Chi cago company, composed of Joy Mor ton and others, are planning to pipe gas the seven miles and connect with the mains of the Winfield Gas Com pany. Epidemic of Impetigo. A number ber of the children of the city schools at Iola have been and are now afflict ed with a contagious disease known in medical circles as impetigo, a pe culiar eruption of the skin. The dis ease is known outside of medical cir cles as the "itch." Atciiison Oil Refinery. The Uncle Sam Oil Refinery at Atchison will be completed and in operation by May 1, 190C, according to W. F. Safety in Proprietary Medicines. Replying to the charge that certain popular proprietary medicines contain narcotic drugs, an authority says: "Some years ago one of the leading pharmacists of America, in connection with some official work, undertook to ascertain, by an elaborate inquiry in representative cities of the country, what percentage of physicians' pre scriptions contained a narcotic drug of some kind. Out of 100,000 repre sentative prescriptions, dispensed in drug stores in all parts of the United States, it was found that 70 per cent contained opium or some one of its preparations. "Proprietary medicines are almost invariably accompanied by the most detailed and specific directions for use, while the directions accompanying physicians' prescriptions are generally very brief and sometimes illegible. It is also true that but a moderate pro portion of proprietary medicines con tain any poison or narcotic, and, when they do, it Is generally in such small quantities or so prot...

Tandy, for more than twenty years a prominent physician of Wlnfield, died of Bright's disease. He was for fire years a partner of Dr. George Em erson, a well known surgeoa of south ern Kansas and Oklahoma. They Visit Lawrence. More than one hundred students of the Rosedale branch of the University of Kansas medical school visited the university, accompanied by fifteen members of the faculty. The visitors Attended chapel and heard a talk by Dr, V. C. Vaughn of the University of Michi gan on "Modern Medicine." Consumption Death Rate Leads. Vital statistics issued by the state board of health for the month of Oc tober show that there were 85 cases and 47 deaths from consumption; 228 cases and 30 deaths from typhoid .fever; 3C4 cases and 41 deaths from diphtheria; 141 cases and no deaths from scarlet fever; 34 cases and 1 death from smallpox, and 88 cases and 8 deaths from dysente...
