[From the Neto York Ir:2d.] While the political annals of the year are writ large with battle, inur der and sudden death, the scientiflC record stands written in letters of living light. At the very outset of the present year the world of science was as sembled on the judges'stand count ing seconds in the race between Picket and Gailletet for liquefying the last of the gases, and thus ex perimuentally proving the unity of nature and the continuity between the solid, liquid and g seous do mains. Tai Notri H Is bon visite.1 with a fearful snowatorm, the exteut of which may be judged by the an nouacem3at that a train between Buf falo and New Y,>rk got lost for a day and nobody knew where it was. L.sT WaEC I shington, a Lieu tenan.t Whitten was tried for fraudu lently obtaining pay to the amount of one hundred and twomty-cight dollars and thirty-three and a quarter cents. His counsel claimed that the indict ment contained a fatal flaw in not mentioning the quarter of a cent. The court dustained the point and quashed the indictment. This Is ciphering downpretty finely. BLAtNn's INvIiTIOATION IIs proved a perfect boomerang. The Democrats all favored investigation, and put their best men on the committee, while the Radicals higgled for closed doora, and the Senators of that party refused to serve. A DesoriDtion of the Queer People Who Reside Anong the Berkshire Hills of New York. ERMnom the Neta and tburier. I In our nineteenth* century we find many singuIarities in modes of worship which'aro hard to reconcile with the spirit of the'age. For instance, the" "Shakers," a sect singtilar in" tlio habits of life, personal aspect, and form of worship of its members. We visited a Shaker village in, the summer among the Berkshire Hills of New York, and found one virtue at least per fectly illustited-oleinliness. Of "godlinoss'! we saw nothink. With in a mile of the village we met a lumbering vehicle proceeding at a funeral rate, with two men and two women sitting .very erect and looking exceedingly uncomfortable. As they approached, the curious garments, the queerly cut hair of the men, und, above- all, to the feminine taste, the outrageous and un...

ASYNOLDS, AssoIATE EtMs. IN'-RspowsE to a request from the investigating conmittee; Senator Blaine refers thein to Messrs. J. B. Campbell, C. G. Memmiinger and E. W. M. Mackey, for information as to the conduct of the election in Charles ton. An Unanswerable Argument. Judge Hudson's dissenting opinion on the validity of thu consolidation bonds is unanswerable. Differing from Judges Aldrich and Thomson, he argues the question in its fullest scope and decides it on its merits. Judge Hudson plainly intinfates the absurdity of electing three judges and spending thousands of dollars to decide only one of the several ques tions affecting the validity of the debt; and very properly inintains that the people are only interested in deciding the final question-whether, from any cause, the bonds are invalid. It will be remembered that Judges Thomson and Aldrich decided that the court had been appointed merely to deci...

The Happy Conolusion of a Very U MOW" mantic Story--The Successful Career of "the Beardless Boy Who Fiddles." On Wednesday the 10th nIt., at Asheville, N. C., Congressman-elect Robert Taylor was united in iar riage with Miss Sallie Baird, a niece of Governor Vance, of North Caro lina. The marriage is the conclu sion of a somewhat romantic story. When Taylor was nominated by the Democrats as their candidate for Congress, Miss Baird promised him that, if elected, she would marry him ; if defeated, it would be an in definite time before their union could be consummated. The district contains some of the strongest Re publican counties in the State, and has always given a Republican ma jority of 2,200 or 2,300. The pros pect for Taylor attaining his dasires were, therefore, not at all promising. Besides, ,he had as an opponent Pettibone, one of the Republican chieftai...

Memmnniger addresses a note to the News and Courier itt reference to his being named by Blaine as a person who could tell the investi gating committee about the "outrages" in Charleston at the election. Mr. MIemminger very coolly and neatly masticates the public prosecutor from Maine, as follows: CHARLESTOX, 8. C., Dec. 30, 1878. To the Editor of .the New. and Courier: Senator Blaine's confidence. must have been sadly abused when he pat my name among the Witnesses to prove fraud in the recent election, as published In your paper of this morning. I ha'd not returned from my summer resideu-:e in the moun talus when the election took place, and I had been there all the summer, so that I know no more of the election than Mr. Blaine himself does.
