In a maritime point of vie w " it owes it privileged situation to the natu • ral shelter which the stroom-bank gives to its roadstead. It is at present proposed to entirely shelter its roadstead by a break water constructed on the stroom-bank. Thin piece of work, similar to those of Cherbourg '.'. and Plymouth, would transform the road stead of Ostend into a safety roadstead in : which ships would find an excellent shelter during the heavy weather of the main sea. A grand Republican demonstration, the .first of the campaign, was held here on Saturday night. : Strange as it may appear, that a mining town of the size and increas- ing importance of Volcano — second in pop ulation in the county — should have been, up to the 23d inst. , ignored or forgotten by the Republican Central Committee. How- ever, the demonstration and speeches of Saturday fully make amends for any seeming neglect, and show that the principles of the great Republican party are not dead in this section of the State. A. P. Van Duser, J. A. Eagon, Republi can nominee for the Assembly, and Dr. Giles of Sutter, were the speakers. The town was beautifully illuminated, and a band discoursed tine mesic in front of Armory Hall, and the local Glee Club one of the best in the mountains enlivened the occasion with selections from the...
