Some Missouri Statistics. It is not often that the bigness of other states interests us, but the following speech delivered by n Missottrinn at a bancitiet we feel sure will amuse, if it docs not Interest, our readers: "II all the wheat raised in Missouri were one grain, the only place to plant it would be the Grand Canyon, Arizona, the only hole in the earth big enough to contain it. If all the corn raised in Missouri were one ear, the only way to shell it would be by steam pump pullers, extracting a grain at a time from the cob. If all the cattle in Missouri were one cow, she could browse the tender herbage of the tropics, switch icicles olT the north pole with her tail and supply enough milk to fill a canal reaching from Kansas City to the gulf on which to ship the boatloads of her cheese and butter. If all the chickens in Missouri were one rooster, he could straddle the Rocky moun tains like a great colossus and crow uutil he shook the rings off the planet Saturn. If all the hog...

New Shipping Pent. The bridge gang for the rail road company Iihh just completed Home most excellent shipping puns at this place. The location is cast of town, between the main line and the Capitan branch. The pens are large enough to accom modate live cars of cattle at one time, and substantial enough to hold the wildest steer on the range. The most attractive fea ture of this improvement over old conditions is the installation of watering troughs fed from the pipe line. Stockmen are greatly pleased by this change, and the advantages offered to shippers here now arc so excellent that it will make Carrizozo one of the most important shipping points on the line. F. J-m: FOREST FIRE PROTECTION. Fercit Rticrre ClrtuUr. Washington, September 26. Otic of the lessons which will fi nally be drawn from the trying experience of the present forest lire season, in the belief of offi cials of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, is the need of wider organisation among private own ers of timber to safeguard their holdings. It is pointed out that already in the Northwest, both on the Pacific coast and in Montana and Idaho, timbcrland owners have formed themselves into associa tions which assess the members on an acreage basis and thus meet the cost of maintaining a regular patrol and lire-lighting organization. Only by getting together can private owners usu ally assure themselves protection for lire is no respecter of boun dary lines and the man who un durtakes to keep it out of his own timber wilt want it kept out o his neighbor's, too. Wherever possible the government's forest officers cooperate with' the force put in the field by the associa tions, so ...
