TRYING DAYS LOCAL TOPICS. Hon. Thorn."s M. May, a Washington pioneer, father of Delos May, a respect ed citizen of this county, lies dead at tin old home in Dayton. The funeral will take place tomorrow. The deceased hi been in declining health for several years ending in dropsy and death. Mr. May was an old-time miner of California, and also lived at Roscburg, Oregon, before coming to Washington in 1871, having been married at the latter place. Din ing his residence in Columbia county he was always prominent in republican politics, attending all republican conven tions and was for a number of years chairman of the republican county cen tral committee. Mr. May was one of the first proprietors of the Columbia Chronicle, Dayton's republican paper, Henry Gale, now dead, and Mr. May having started the paper in 1878. TRYING DAYS 1 LOCAL TOPICS. Angry flames leaping from the roof of Margraf's cafe this morning at 4 o'clock brought an alarm from the bells which quickly called the citizens to the scene.; The fire departments were promptly on hand with two strong streams in full | play. Through good generalship and | concerted action the fire was kept con fined to the inside of the burning build ing until the fire was under control, otherwise the safety of the town would have been seriously endangered. The structure was owned by Mrs. Geo. L. Tinnel and was conducted as a hotel with bar attachment. The corner building and the addition used as a kitchen for the cafe were completely burned on the m. inside leaving only the outside walls ™ standing. The structure and furnishings were all insured and adjusters arrive to day to fix the loss.
