fc l j 1 1 rot liitiils THE EXCHANGE THURSDAY, AUGUST 14. 1879. It would seem the people of Tennes eee understand the principles of addi tioD better than those of subtraction, when it coiues la settling a state debt. Whether it is easier to pay twelve or twenty four millions of dollars is a proposition anyone (except a majority of those who voted on Thursday) can Bolve, without seriously jarring his mental machinery.. Casting aside pleasantry we cannot see what has lecu accomplished by refusing to rat ify the proposed compromise. The entire debt, accumulating at the rate of a million and a half of dollars per annum, still stands against us, and the holders are clamorous for a settle ment. The situation is' plain, but the way out of the difficulties which tenvi ron us, is the "rub." A non-accept-auce by the popular vote has increased the complexity of the 'question. Terhaps a decided majority of those who voted "rejected" are in favor of repudiation, w hile others who opposed the mea...

i i "j THE EXCHANGE THURSDAY, AUGUST 21. 1879. tkxmsee Dr.noiR.tcY. A good many uervous people arc Fcriously alarmed lest the late failure to compromise our State debt will cau.se a rupture in the Democratic party. - A greater mistake was never made. In the late legislature mem bers of both political parties worked and voted for the proposition to settle, and leading Republicans as well as Democrats stumped the State for and endorsed the compromise oa the sev enth of Angnst; then why say the Democratic more than the Republican party is in danger of a disintegration? Oa this subject, we heartily endorse the following sound doctrine, as put by the Nashville Banner: All observing men will agree that those who are ia favor of paying the entire debt are but few, and those who are in favor of repudiating the entire debt are equally in the minority. Be tween these extreme, popular opinion is broken into infinite fragments It is unnecessary to go into minutue, it suits our purpose to gugges...
