The New Orleans Tunes of October 31st eays: ,It is doubtless within the recollec tion f many in this city that in the year 1821 Gen. Lafayette made a tour of thia country, attended by buch an ovation as offered perhaps tho grandest spectacle of a nation's tribute to a hero tho world has ever seen. During his tour, tho General svaa nvysteriously robbed of his watch, a valued fcouvenir, which ha 1 been presented to him, in 1781, by ueii. vrorge Washington, to om mmcrdte at once the at'eetionate relations which had long existed be tween them, and his gallant services at tho siego of Yorktown, the crown ing event in the struggle for Ameri can independence. Directly upon the robbery becoming known, most strenuous efforts were made for its recovery, but despite the fact that the Governor of Tennessee ofiered a reward of one thousand dollars for its return, not the slighte...

IThy Flour and Bread should be Cheap. Early in the history of the wheat harvest of this year, the impression that there would be a short crop of this cereal" obtained ro firm a foot ing that prices advanced rapidly, and have up to within a few weeks past remained very firm in all the markets of this country. The uni versal stringency in the money mar ket was the first cause which pro duced a weakening of prices. Mil lers were compelled to pay cash for wheat, while they could not convert their product readily into that arti cle. They could make shipments of flour to the East and draw against them, but their drafts, were general ly for thirty days, and, therefore, to a great extent, unconvertible in a market where eifrht exchange was at a discount and not wanted by the banks. The demand for wheat con sequently lessened and the market dragged heavily. On the top of this depressed state of feeling came the October report of the Agricultural Bareau, showing that tho wheat crop of 1871 am...

PresiJent'iMessap. To the Senate and House of Repke-kekt.jt-es. With the exception of u devastating fire, which swept from the earth with a breath, as it were, millions of property accumulated within the city of Boston, there have been no overshad owing calamities within the year to re cord. It is gratifying to note how, like their fellow-citizens of Chicago under similar circumstances a year earlier, the citizens of lioston are rallying under their misfortunes, and the prospect is that their energy and perseverance will overcome obstacles, und show the pros perity soon that they would hud no dis aster befallen them. Agricultural. FEED IX G CHOPS. The notion prevails "with many farm ers and others that tho roots. of plants actually consume the manure in the soil that it ia taken up and digested in the system of the plant, and thus con tributes to its growth. The stalk of corn or grass does not eat, but it drinks. All their food is taken in a liquid state. Water is the great solvent to absorb and prepare the plant food. Soil is nothing more or less than de composed rock, with a mixture of vege table matter, and the growing of crops takes nothing from the weight or meas ure of the soil in wliieh they are grown. This has been proved by actual experi ment, and may be proven by others at any time. Farmers are apt to dispute alxmt the best manner of applying manure to the fcoil, whether on the surface, or plough ed under, two, four, six or eight iuche. The rain falls on the surface, passes into tho soil through the immure, and sibsorbs the fertilizing properties con tained in it, and thus tho soil is ...
