Appeal to tlie "Appeal" on the Question t Is Mr. Seward a JLecomptonlan or an Antl 1 [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 28 January 1860

Appeal to tlie "Appeal" on the Question t Is Mr. Seward a JLecomptonlan or an Antl 1 [For tho Appeal.] EDITOR APPEAL Mr. Etheridgc, from Tennessee, who at the present time speaks in Congress, spoke there, in 185G-7, and said, in a speech, February 21, 1857 : "The Richmond Enquirer is one of the oldest, best established, and most ably conducted Democratic journals in the South. Its influence is felt and acknowledged everywhere. I submit the following extract from that paper : 'The Democrats of the South, in the present canvass, cannot rely on the old grounds of defense and excuse for slavery ; for they seek not merely to retain it where it is, bnt to extend it into regions where it is unkown. Much less can they rely on the mere constitutional guarantees of slavery, for snch reliance is pregnant with the admission that slavery is wrong, and but for the constitution, should be abolished. Nor will it avail us aught to show, that the negro is most happy and best situated in the condition...

8«n Francisco Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 28 January 1860

8«n Francisco Correspondence. [From our own Correspondent.] SAN FRANCISCO, Jnn. 26,1860. EDITOR APPEAL :—Miss Harriett Gor- \ den made her debut last night at Ma- | guire's to a jammed house. She is i a charming actress and sweet vocal-1 ist. The performance was quite refresh- j ing, and carried one's thoughts back to the days of Mrs. John Wood. The Marys- j ville people will have an opportunity for judging Mrs. Gordon's merits very soon. I have just learned the particulars of a very distressing accident, that occurred in this city last night. The wife of Mr. John O'Brien, of Kearney street, fell asleep in her bed-room while nursing an infant, and only awakened to find herself enveloped inflames. A candle was burning undisturbed oil the table, and it is presumed that a Lucifer match on the floor had ignited under foot. There were two other children asleep in a crib. The apartment also took lire, and but for the fortunate vicinity of Mr. Gustave Sutro, the owner of the premises, the ...

* —j Sail Francisco Correwpondence. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 28 January 1860

* — j Sail Francisco Correwpondence. SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25, 1860. EDITOR APPEAL :—I have had the pleasure of reading the second number of the APPEAL, and am delighted with it. The people ofMarysville required just such a newspaper, and will give it good support. If agreeable to you, I will, from time to time, keep you posted somewhat as to the "doius"in this highly intellectual and moral town, and endeavor to second every appeal you make. The overland mail has arrived, and the dispatches to the Bulletin are non est. Serious charges have been made against certain parties of playing '"possum" with the wires, but whether there is any foundation for thorn, I will not pretend to say. I think, in a day or two, I will be able to give yen some interesting items concerning tin whole matter. Speaking of this, reminds me to say that J. Horace Kent i$ the agent of the Pacific Associated Press at Firebaugh's Ferry, and M. M. Noah, ot" the Alia, is the agent at Malloy's Station. In consequence o...

The "Singing Fish" of Ceylon. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 28 January 1860

The "Singing Fish" of Ceylon. Lite glattg Appeal On the occasion of another visit which I made to Batticoloa in September, 18)8,1 made some inquiries relative to a story which I had heard of musical sounds, said to be heard issuing from the bottom of the lake, at several places, both above and below the ferry opposite the old Dutch fort, and which the natives suppose to proceed from some fish peculiar to the locality. The report was confirmed to me in all its particulars, and one of the spots whence the- sound proceeded was pointed out between the pier and a rock which intersects the channel two or three hundred yards to the eastward. They were said to be heard nt night, and most distiucly , when the moon was nearest the full, and I they were described a3 resembling the 1 faint sweet notes of an „£olian harp. I j sent for some of the fishermen, who said | they were perfectly aware of the fact, and that their fathers had always known of the existence of the musical sounds heard, they...

Agricultural Matter*. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 28 January 1860

Agricultural Matter*. DRAINING FOR WHEAT. —The following extract from an able treaties on this subject iu an Eastern farming paper may suggest some new ideas to the owners of swamp and overflowed lauds iu our State : Drainage resists drout'i, again, by the ! very deepening of the toil of which we have already spoken. The roots of plants, we have seen, will not extend into stagnant water. If, then, as is frequently the case, even on sandy plains, the water line be, in early spring, very near the surface, the seed may be planted, may vegetate and throw up a goodly show of leaves and stalks, which may flourish as loug as the early rains cease, the sun comes out in his June brightness, the water line lowers at once in the soil, the roots have no 1 deptli to draw moisture from below, and the whole field of clover or of corn, iu a single week, is past recovery. Now, if j this light, sandy soil be drained, so that, \ at the first start of the crop, there is a j deep seedbed free from water...
