The Last. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 November 1859

The Last. 'Tis the last buckwheat cake —I regret it is so— All its lovely companions have gone—down below; No "batter" remaining, alas, and what's more, We've no more of the flour of its kindred in store. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, cooped under that cover, Thou'rt "nicely done brown," thou wilt soon be "done over," For what would one "slapjack" be good for, I'd know, All cold as the weather, the world, or the snow? O, what will become, if the times be so hard, Of the children and wife of a newspaper bard? What weapon, I wonder, hath fortune in store, With which we may battle the wolf from the door! "There's a good time a coming," the wiseacres say, They tell us be patient, wait, labor and pray; I would own they are right, just to make out my song, But if "good times" is coining, why not come along? For its hard when "a felly's" cooped up in a shop, To labor with hammer, with skiver and strop, And gets for a week, to meet household expense, The sum of one dollar and seventy-...

The Organization of the next House —Plurality VoTE,-From all we can gather, it appears quite plain, from the classification of members elected to the next House of Representatives, that the Republicans are paving the way t-o elect their own Speaker, Clerk and Printer. To accomplish this, however, it will be necessary for them to control Southern opposition votes sufficient to adopt the plurality rule. The classification stands thus: Republicans 113 Democrats 92 Anti-Lecompton Democrats, 11 ■Southern opposition, 21 Total 237 Majority to elect 119 ft will Therefore be seen the Ropublicans lack but six of having a clear and decided majority on the first ballot, while the National Administration Democrats lack twen-ty-seven. It is presumed, and even asserted, that the Southern opposition members will bring forward a candidate of their own lind take the desperate chance of winning one or the other of the great elements to their aid, if not for Speaker, to make good terms with one of them...

Remembrances in Tulare Valley. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 November 1859

Remembrances in Tulare Valley. Don't you remember Ned, when we first landed here, This place was all a wilderness, the haunts of bear and deer; No white man's hut was seen, Ned, no waving fields of grain, But Diggers held the sway, Ned, o'er all this vast domain? Don't you remember, Ned, we kept a guard at night, For fear the Diggers might slip in and hoist us like a kite; But that they never tried, Ned, and maybe they war'nt lucky, Not to interfere with the hunters from Kcntuckcy? And don't you remember, Ned, when the rainy season came, We all ran out of grub, Ned, and had to live on game ; The hawk was our game, Ned, the squirrels we couldn't kill, For bread we used our barlcv ground in a coffee mill? That was the way we lived, Ned, while we here did tarry, To take us up a ranch, Ned, to settle down and marry. Though seven years have past, Ned, some mighty changes wrought, Yet you and I arc single, Ned, the like 1 never thought. This country now is changed, Ned, from what it used ...

TO A PORTRAIT. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 November 1859

TO A PORTRAIT. Gilded image ! worshiped tokenPledge of love so deeply spokenEmblem note of row s that 're broken Why look'st thou full at me ? Would'st thou by a look presuming, Search the secret heart-communing, And see the grief this breast consuming ? A grief that ne'er will flee. I know that I should feeling smother, But 'round the past sad thoughts will hover. Yes! one look more—l'll close the cover And gaze no more on thee. Alice. Millerton, Fresno Co. ? October 31st., 1859. , Our "sprightly little town" showeth signs of increasing activity. Two new roofs have been commenced during the past week, and it is confidently predicted that at least half a bundle of shingles will be used up immediately after the advent of the first heavy rain. The dignity of the place was greatly enhanced on Saturday by the arrival, and sojourn until Sunday morning, of the distinguished J. Y. McDuffy, Indian Agent, and J. Boss Brown. Yours Respectfully, Citizen.

Washington News. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 5 November 1859

Washington News. New York, Oct. 12.—The Washington correspondent of the New York Ileruhl says it is understood that the British minister, Lord Lyon, had received a peremptory and important dispatch from his government, demanding explanations from our government on the course of Gen. Harney in the San Juan affair, to which the Secretary of State is now preparing a reply, which will vindicate fully our rights, and doubtless cover the whole ground of the controversy to the satisfaction of the American people. The whole matter will be laid before the President on his return to-morrow. A communication has been received from the British Government, through Lord Loyns, requesting that their acknowledgements may be conveyed to Mr. Ward, our Minister to China; and Commodore Tatnall for their friendly conduct at the affair of the Peiho Forts. Dispatches have been received at the Department of State from our Minister at St. Petersburg, stating that intelligence had been received that Minister ...
