- --I- - - -- ^-I- , I ' fain persuaded her that her very, F-ilts were virtues. Yet she showed her inherent good sense, by passing them all by for honest John Arkright, who, though he took her to his generous heart, as a most dear and precious gift, loving her as oniy such strong natures can love, not only saw that she had failings, but would have felt that he was false to the trust reposed in him, had he not done his best to make her conscious of them also. "He said I should be sorry; I wonder what he meant?" was Susan's inward inquiry, many times during the long afternoon, which seemed as though it would never end...

I. "BEFO' THE WA." rbe Sunsets Then Were F'ar Mlore ]Beautiful. Southerners who lived in more luxury before the iwar than they have been able to do since have a very natural way of dating everything by comparing every event of the present time to those palmy days "befo' the wa," says the Country Gentleman. It is quite unnecessary to add that all things suffer by the comparison. A little patch of fleecy clouds had evidently caught fast on the pines in passing a Illiff, and some one said Beancatcher peak was flirting with Beaumont, while the Balsam range, others said, had already put on a nightcap of mist...
